Default Fostering a Loyal Fansite Ecosystem

Hello folks. Some of you may remember me from the OVF and VGTact, or perhaps the EQ2 community. This game is pretty exciting, so I'd like to discuss with you all a topic near to my heart as a fansite admin. I'm eager to start off on the right foot with the community team in fostering a great ecosystem of fansites.

I'll point to Vanguard as the best example of encouraging a great community of fansites, and using those fansites for player feedback and outreach. While the game experienced several changes (and, imo, ultimately a decline) in encouraging good fansites, I think the initial system of SGO Affiliate sites allowed small players like me to develop into worthy competitors to the big multi-game websites. This relationship was, of course, significantly enhanced by the wonderful devs on the VG Diplomacy team (is doomcookie really working on this game?!). And I think that starts with the community/PR team creating a good precedent for community interaction by people who aren't community "specialists."

So my question , then, is what will the Rift team do to encourage a great group of fansites to develop? Personally, I'd like to see a system that helps provide some access (for dev chats, etc) and exclusives to "smaller" sites. Give admins easy access to the community manager. Allow devs to reach out to forums other than the official site, like the devs did for VGTact and VanguardCrafters (among others). I don't know if I'll start a site myself, or just support others, but I think that this is a critical aspect of starting this game off right and building the kind of community that will be loyal to the game for many years.

Great post, Tral. They've not said much in regards to their CM plans or on the fansite topic, but hopefully things get moving now that the game is out of hibernation. A lot of bigger titles lately seem to focus solely on a few large sites (I guess I can understand from a marketing perspective) and are less interested in the overall community. And the answer to the ? in the 2nd paragraph is yes. ;)

A wiki is only as good as its contributors won't you help?

Agreed, I hope that we start hearing some positive things about community interaction. These forums are a good start! But developing external communities is, I believe, an equally vital component to a game's long-term viability. I'm encouraged to see sites like Telara Central and Telarapedia doing well so far.

Well the biggest way I would imagine they would do this is with Beta invites.

Trion used to be very active on TelaraCentral, getting on IRC, bickering with the community, holding contests, was fun. Hope they pick it up again once they get all settled in with everything that's changed.

I want another chance to win a Trion pillow to cry myself to sleep into in case I don't make beta. That way all my tears would be directed at Trion and plus I won't ruin a pillow that I spent money on.

I started making my own Rift: fansite. I am hoping they will put out some more female artwork. I am not near finished yet. This has been my first time, making one. I am pretty slow too, apparently

That's good to hear! Sounds like they're still slowly becoming unstealthed, but hopefully we can encourage some dev participation on other sites.
