    Default Rift Feature Guide Expanded

    Rift Feature Guide

    Updated: 11/20/2010

This post attempts to give more detailed information about Rift's various features. This guide should better reveal to people if Rift has the type of combat, crafting, raiding, grouping, pvp, or world systems they are looking for in a MMO. The official FAQ page is here.

As more information becomes available I will update this post. If you think another category needs to be added or wish to add something to a category, post the suggestion or PM my account.

This thread is created to be displayed in "Linear Mode" with at least 10 posts displayed. Links that point to various sections of the thread will not function if viewed in the other two display modes or fewer then 10 posts are displayed.

    Color Legend

An orange [Pending] text signifies a feature that has been inferred, may change or is not confirmed.
A number inside brackets, [1], at the end of game feature is a link to the reference list and the numbered reference.

    Classes / Callings / Souls / Roles

    [Official Classes Page]
[Official Class and Soul System Explanation]

    How the class system works

You choose a calling (Warrior, Cleric, Rogue, Mage). Your calling determines what armor and what souls your character will use.

You start with one soul, think of a soul as a skill tree. At max level you have 51 points that you can spend in your soul tree. Over time you can attune (equip) up to three souls. You can spend your 51 points across those 3 souls, 2 souls, or just max out one soul. You get your second soul "slot" at 15 and your third soul "slot" at 30. You can swap out ANY of your souls for other souls within your calling. You can save various soul sets as roles and switch between the saved roles. Some souls within your calling may allow you to mix some of the common mmorpg archetypes (ie. tanks with a bit healing, rogues with bit of tanking, etc). See the official class/soul page for greater detail. [Pending]
    • Total starting classes is currently unknown. [src] [Pending]
    • There are 4 callings and 8 souls per calling. That is 32 souls. (GamingWeez is correct) [25] [42]
    • There will be around 270 combinations of souls at launch. [41]
    • You will be able to save up to 4 soul combinations as roles. You can then switch between these roles while not in combat. [31] [37]
    • If you have spent points on a soul tree you will need to visit a trainer to change out the soul, there is a small monetary fee. [31]
    • There are souls that are not combat related and may be used for special events. [4]
    • An example image showing how spending points works. Source image is from IGN. [4]
    • Some souls can be acquired through crafting or raiding. [35]
    • "All callings with the exception of clerics had an extra mechanic like action points for warriors, combo points for rogues, and charge for mages." [43]

    • "Standard difficulty dungeons will definitely be able to be reset immediately. Right now we're planning on putting a daily limit on the "Expert" difficulty dungeons however that is definitely not set in stone." -Berenger Fish [38]

    Death Penalty

You can soul walk once an hour, which lets you run away from your dead corpse and avoid the death penalty. If you die and you already used your soul walk you will lose a portion of your hit points and power bars. There are special foods that can remove the death penalty. -TenTonHammer [37]

    Dynamic Features
    • Rifts (dynamic open world encounter) scale based on number of people in the area. Show up in random locations, appear based on various things happening in the world. See Rifts Section
    • "Planar incursions can go beyond a rift event and actually travel over the lands and destroy other areas as well as other rift types." See Rifts Section
    • NPC's may have goals and may react to the world. "The one example I love to use a lot is the merchant that wanders the globe and has her own wants and desires. She wants to go from point A to point B, she gets bored if nobody shops with her, she goes home and restocks, you know, those sort of things." [11]
    • Heroic Challenges - "which are essentially miniature raid bosses that appear in instances and immediately act as quest goals." [10]

    PVP
    • There is PVP.
    • Faction based, there are two factions. The differing factions cannot team up or guild
    • PvP will be completely consensual on PvE servers. [16]
    • There are "battlegrounds/scenarios". [20]
    • You can level with PVP, but you will need to some PVE. [26]
    • For faction population balance "...they intend to make up the player deficit by introducing NPCs where necessary." [35] (Hartsman made a special comment about this tidbit, see his post here.)
    • Servers could "potentially spawn RIFT events that encourage TEMPORARY and LIMITED world PVP" [45]
    • Full PVP server may see "ton of fast paced action revolving around RIFTS & Invasions" [45]
    • In general, opening or closing a rift on a PvE server does not flag you for pvp [src]

    Rifts

    [Official Rifts Page]

A rift is like a portal through which the enemies of Telara can enter the world. Rifts dynamically show up in the world, change creatures around their vicinity, create encounters for the players, may launch attacks and may completely change a zone.

Rifts start out as a tears. A player may open a tear if they find one or given enough time, a tear will open into a rift by itself. A rift can spawn just about any where in the world, some may even spawn in town. If a rift is left alone and not dealt with by players, it may expand to cover the entire zone and/or start sending out armies.

The encounter at a rift comes in phases/waves, with each phase getting more difficult. Each phase may be different, requiring the player to deal with a new situation. There are different sizes of rifts and rifts generally spawn creatures around the level of the area in which the rift opened.

During the course of the encounter loot is automagically handed out to players that are actively taking part. If you show up late and help a little you will still get something. A group can push the rift into a unstable state (bonus type stage) to gain the best loot. It is possible to solo a rift, but you will most likely not be able to get loot from the unstable state without some help.

"A specific rift event only grows to a certain size (this may vary depending on how they play in testing) but in addition to that planar incursions can go beyond a rift event and actually travel over the lands and destroy other areas as well as other rift types."

Most randomly occurring rifts are "minor" and can be completed by a small group or a single player. Larger rifts are usually triggered by players, this reduces the chance of you walking into a large group encounter.

    Sources: [15] [17] [18] [23] [24] [27] [32] [33] [35] [41]

    Rifts:
    • are a dynamically appearing public encounter
    • appear randomly or based on user actions
    • do not necessarily appear in the same location
    • come in different sizes
    • can be pushed into an unstable state, which offers greater loot for groups completing a rift
    • some can be completed solo
    • automagically hand out loot as you do things to progress through the encounter
    • may include some simple puzzle solving
    • may have timed events that change the outcome of the encounter
    • may create a foothold and send out invasions
    • invading forces can be tracked back to the source rift by visible planar tracks
    • the invading forces show up on the large map
    • invasions can take out npcs and even quest-givers

    Servers
    • There will be different server types. (PvP,PvE,RP) [3]
    • PvP will be completely consensual on PvE servers. [16]

    World

    [Official Dynamic World Page]
    • Both static and dynamic aspects
    • World is mainly seamless.
    • Instances make up a, "very tiny fraction of the entire world's content."
    • Dynamic "Rifts" that appear randomly and can cause larger changes on the world if they are not closed. Scale dynamically to the number of players in the area. Loot based on how much and how long you helped out in the process.
    • Mobs have set behaviors (goals?) and do not always spawn in the same location at the same time. (curious how extensive this really is)
    • Different servers will have different features depending on how the servers players progress.
    • NPC's may have goals and may react to the world. "The one example I love to use a lot is the merchant that wanders the globe and has her own wants and desires. She wants to go from point A to point B, she gets bored if nobody shops with her, she goes home and restocks, you know, those sort of things." [11]

Just a note, if you have been following this thread.

There was a mix up in the consolidation of the sticky posts, as a result this is now the thread for this information. The old thread has been deleted.

    Update

    Soul / Class System

Summarized most of the data relating to souls with a link to the official page.
Left common numbers and details outside of the summary so people can still quickly reference or find them.

The same type of changes are coming to the Rift section. The summary makes it much easier to read and helps important numbers / details pop out.
