    Default Rift Servers Down?

    is this a planned outage or? just a massive crash?

    It's just another crash like all the other crashes, after many hours/days of poor server performance leading to the inevitable. Bringing the servers down entirely to clear the bloated caches would have much the same result, so it's a lose-lose situation for players. Unless the root causes of these problems are fixed (unlikely) this is the status quo. We either deal with server processes that go until they die at random and we're subject to unexpected outages, or we have extended planned outages multiple times weekly.

    If you're expecting stability Rift is not the game to play.

    It's common. Interns with minimum wage have ho idea how things work, so turnining it off and on again is a solution for everything.
