Default Leveling as a Warrior Tank - Reaver - Patch 2.3

    REAVER

Due to popular demand I've finally got around to updating my guide.
Once again, as this is a leveling guide it sometimes sacrifices optimal performance for ease of use in an attempt to make it beginner friendly where possible. I've decided to be a bit fancier with my layout this time around since it was a little cluttered and confusing before. Onto the good stuff!

This guide is intended to help players new to Warrior or Rift in general as they level a Warrior Tank. This guide is for tanking in dungeons, it is not an effective spec for solo content.

    MILESTONE #1 - Level 16

While it is possible to queue for Realm of the Fae (the first dungeon available) at Level 15, I strongly advise you to wait until Level 16, as this is when you get your first AoE ability Cyclone Strike. While it is possible to tank without it, it will be substantially harder to hold aggro.

    THE SPEC - 16 Reaver/5 Void Knight
For your third soul you have several options, in which to place 0pts. If you have purchased to Storm Legion souls you can pick between Tempest and Warlord, if you have not then I recommend Warlord. Warlord gives you Sergeant's Order which pulls an enemy toward you, but is not a taunt. Tempest gives you Shock Pulse which is a spammable ranged ability. Personally I prefer Tempest but Warlord is very useful in some situations.

    ABILITIES YOU SHOULD USE

    Reaver
-Soul Sickness - Ranged DoT, maintain on the primary target
-Ravaging Strike - Spammable melee builder
-Dire Blow - Melee Finisher, use at 3 Attack Points
-Crest of the Abyss - Self Buff, maintain at all times
-Binding of Affliction - Self Buff, maintain at all times
-Crest of the Shadow - Minor Absorb, used on cooldown
-Grim Lure - Single Target taunt, use when you lose aggro on a target. If you taunt more than 3 times in a 20s period the enemy will become immune to taunts. Therefore you should only taunt when necessary.
-Blood Fever - Melee DoT, maintain on the primary target
-Cyclone Strike - AoE builder, your primary method of maintain AoE threat, should be used on cooldown in AoE situations
-Dire Corruption - Ground Target Area Effect Finisher

    Void Knight
-Void - Self Buff, maintain at all times
-Accord of Resilience - Self Buff, maintain at all times
    Warlord
-Sergeant's Order - Pulls enemy toward you, used on casters or ranged mobs to bring them to melee range

    Tempest
-Enhanced Conductivity - Self Buff, maintain at all times
-Shock Pulse - Ranged spammable builder

    General Abilities
-Break Free - Frees the player from crowd control effects

    Note on Pacts
Several Void Knight abilities refer to Pacts or allow you to generate them. Because we will not be investing many points into Void Knight we will not be paying attention to them since this build lacks the tools to generate and consume them effectively. Simply ignore them.

    MACROS

Macros in Rift follow a simple priority order. Every time you press a macro it executes the first available ability in the macro. You need to press the macro every time you want to execute an ability. For example the following macro would cast Soul Sickness during the first GCD when pressed, then in the second GCD when pressed it would use Ravaging Strike because Soul Sickness would still be on CD. If the player were out of melee range it would cast Shock Pulse second because Ravaging Strike requires melee range.

    #show Soul Sickness
    suppressmacrofailures
    cast Soul Sickness
    cast Ravaging Strike
    cast Shock Pulse

If the following macro were used it would always use Ravaging Strike if the player was in melee range because Ravaging Strike has no cooldown. If the player were out of melee range it would first use Soul Sickness and then use Shock Pulse

    #show Soul Sickness
    suppressmacrofailures
    cast Ravaging Strike
    cast Soul Sickness
    cast Shock Pulse

The following are handy macros to use which can simplify playing a tank so you can focus more on positioning and mechanics. If you do not have Tempest simply remove Shock Pulse from the macros, otherwise they should be able to be copied and pasted directly in-game.

    Single Target Builder
    #show Soul Sickness
    suppressmacrofailures
    cast Crest of the Shadow
    cast Soul Sickness
    cast Ravaging Strike
    cast Shock Pulse
    cast Break Free

    AoE Builder
    #show Cyclone Strike
    suppressmacrofailures
    cast Crest of the Shadow
    cast Cyclone Strike
    cast Soul Sickness
    cast Ravaging Strike
    cast Shock Pulse
    cast Break Free

    Finisher
    #show Dire Corruption
    suppressmacrofailures
    cast Dire Corruption
    cast Dire Blow
    cast Break Free

Blood Fever should be on its own separate button

    SELF BUFFS

    -Crest of the Abyss
    -Binding of Affliction
    -Void
    -Enhanced Conductivity
    -Accord of Resilience

    ROTATION

    Pulling
    1) Crest of the Shadow
    2) Spam Single Target Builder until mobs reach melee range
    3) Cyclone Strike as soon as enemies reach melee range, even if only one

    Rotation
    1) Maintain Blood Fever DoT on primary target
    2) Spam either Single Target or AoE Builder Macro until 3 Attack Points
    3) Use Finisher Macro at 3 Attack Points

    MILESTONE #2 - Level 24

    THE SPEC - 24 Reaver/8 Void Knight

    NEW ABILITIES

    Reaver
    - Concussion - AoE Taunt
-Crest of Entropy - Powerful Defensive CD, should be used to mitigate large amounts of incoming damage
-Plague Bringer - Causes your DoTs to affect the target and up to 7 other targets, used in AoE situations

    Void Knight
-Spark - Single Target Taunt, generates an Attack Point, should be used instead of Grim Lure
-Spellbreaker - Self Cleanse, should be used whenever possible to help your healer out

    MACROS

    Single Target Builder
    #show Soul Sickness
    suppressmacrofailures
    cast Crest of the Shadow
    cast Soul Sickness
    cast Blood Fever
    cast Shock Pulse
    cast Break Free

    AoE Builder
    #show Cyclone Strike
    suppressmacrofailures
    cast Plague Bringer
    cast Crest of the Shadow
    cast Cyclone Strike
    cast Soul Sickness
    cast Blood Fever
    cast Shock Pulse
    cast Break Free

    Finisher
    #show Dire Corruption
    suppressmacrofailures
    cast Dire Corruption
    cast Dire Blow
    cast Break Free

    SELF BUFFS

    -Crest of the Abyss
    -Binding of Affliction
    -Void
    -Enhanced Conductivity
    -Accord of Resilience

    ROTATION

    Pulling
    1) Crest of the Shadow
    2) Plague Bringer if multiple enemies
    3) Spam Single Target Builder until mobs reach melee range
    4) Cyclone Strike as soon as enemies reach melee range, even if only one target

    Rotation
    1) Spam either Single Target or AoE Builder Macro until 3 Attack Points
    2) Use Finisher Macro at 3 Attack Points

    Blood Fever vs Ravaging Strike
While the initial DoT tick of Blood Fever does less damage than Ravaging Strike it now has a much lower Power Cost due to the passive Ethereal Bond. While not a big issue at this stage, later on you can run out of Power if you use Ravaging Strike instead of Blood Fever and it's good to get into good practices early.

    MILESTONE #3 - Level 32

    THE SPEC - 32 Reaver/10 Void Knight
Note, this requires a Role respec which is available at a Warrior Class Trainer

    NEW ABILITIES

    Reaver
    -Infestation - Hard-hitting DoT
-Binding of Shadow - Self Buff, maintain at all times. Replaces Binding of Affliction
-Spasm - Interrupt, used on enemy casts with a blue bar
-Shadow of Dread - Charge, applies known DoTs. Note this ability requires you to be 3-20m away from the target, so when tanking enemies you will need to backpedal 1 or 2 steps to reach sufficient range. You should be able to do this without leaving melee or moving the enemy.

    MACROS

    Single Target Builder
    #show Soul Sickness
    suppressmacrofailures
    cast Crest of the Shadow
    cast Shadow of Dread
    cast Blood Fever
    cast Soul Sickness
    cast Shock Pulse
    cast Break Free

    AoE Builder
    #show Cyclone Strike
    suppressmacrofailures
    cast Plague Bringer
    cast Crest of the Shadow
    cast Cyclone Strike
    cast Blood Fever
    cast Soul Sickness
    cast Shock Pulse
    cast Break Free

    Finisher
    #show Dire Corruption
    suppressmacrofailures
    cast Dire Corruption
    cast Dire Blow
    cast Break Free

Infestation should be on a separate button

    SELF BUFFS

    -Crest of the Abyss
    -Binding of Shadow
    -Void
    -Enhanced Conductivity
    -Accord of Resilience

    ROTATION

    Pulling
    1) Crest of the Shadow
    2) Plague Bringer
    3) Shadow of Dread
    4) Cyclone Strike as soon as you reach melee range

    Rotation
    1) Use Shadow of Dread on cd to maintain DoTs
    2) Use Infestation on cooldown
    3) Spam either Single Target or AoE Builder Macro until 3 Attack Points
    4) Use Finisher Macro at 3 Attack Points

    MILESTONE #4 - Level 44

    THE SPEC - 44 Reaver/14 Void Knight

    NEW ABILITIES

    Reaver
    -Flesh Rot - Ranged DoT
    -Necrotic Wounds - Ranged DoT

    cast Cyclone Strike
    cast Blood Fever
    cast Soul Sickness

    cast Break Free

    Finisher
    #show Dire Corruption

    2) Rotate Infestation and Explosive Infestation every ~8s so one is always active on the primary target
    3) Spam either Single Target or AoE Builder Macro until 3 Attack Points
    4) Use Finisher Macro at 3 Attack Points

    MILESTONE #5 - Level 51

This is when you'll be entering Storm Legion dungeons. Be aware that tank damage increases significantly in the new dungeons, expect to take much more damage than you were up to level 50. I would recommend that you not queue as a tank at the minimum level for Storm Legion dungeons unless you are very confident of your abilities, wait 1 or 2 levels. It will also become much more important to properly time your defensive cooldowns, so pay attention to which abilities hit hard and next pull be prepared. Expect to, pardon my french, get ****ing rocked.

    THE SPEC - 51 Reaver/16 Void Knight

    NEW ABILITIES

    Reaver
-Creeping Corruption - AoE Finisher, unlike other Corruptions this ability is centered on the Warrior, not dropped on the ground
-Binding of Death - Self Buff, maintain at all times

    Void Knight
-Tempest - AoE builder, show be used on cooldown in AoE situations
-Rift Summon - Pulls the enemy toward you

Since you have this Rift Summon going 0pt Warlord for Sergeant's Order is now less important. If you do not have Tempest you could consider going 0pt Paladin for Aggressive Block although personally I would use Tempest if possible.

    Paladin
-Aggressive Block - Short duration self buff, maintain at all times

    MACROS

    Single Target Builder
    #show Soul Sickness
    suppressmacrofailures
    cast Crest of the Shadow
    cast Shadow of Dread
    cast Blood Fever
    cast Soul Sickness
cast Shock Pulse (Replace with Necrotic Wounds if you don't have Tempest)

    cast Crest of the Shadow
    cast Cyclone Strike
    cast Tempest
    cast Blood Fever
    cast Soul Sickness
    cast Necrotic Wounds
    cast Break Free

    Finisher
    #show Dire Corruption
    suppressmacrofailures
    cast Dire Corruption
    cast Creeping Corruption
    cast Stumbling Corruption
    cast Dire Blow
    cast Break Free

    SELF BUFFS

    3) Spam either Single Target or AoE Builder Macro until 3 Attack Points
    4) Use Finisher Macro at 3 Attack Points

    MILESTONE #6 - Level 59

You're almost at Level 60, keep at it and push through the last bit!

    THE SPEC - 58 Reaver/17 Void Knight

    NEW ABILITIES

    Reaver
-Decaying Corruption - GTAE Finisher, deals additional damage to enemies moving inside the AoE
-Crest of Consumption - Short-term Defensive CD, with a longer duration Healing modifier. You should aim to use this ability as frequently as possible without wasting it

    MACROS

    Single Target Builder
    #show Soul Sickness

    4) Use Finisher Macro at 3 Attack Points

    MILESTONE #7 - Level 60

Welcome to the show! Congratulations on making it to level 60, my job is almost done! For the foreseeable future I'll be doing tanking mathematics for the community to help make sure everything is balanced.

Once you hit level 60 you receive the buff Binding of Devouring Darkness which makes spreading your DoTs much simpler as well as buffing your survivability nicely. For level 60 tanking guides I suggest Roughraptors' guides which are available at the Riftscene website.

I'm trying Reaver and find it interesting, albeit a bit more challening than VK and Boradin. I like the (dare I say it?) Death Knight feeling of it.

My Warrior is leveling up through Storm Legion at the moment, and has a Reaver/Paladin/Warlord spec that I use to AOE with: http://rift.magelo.com/en/soultree#9u/6kGGBikGGay/8p2E

Eleven points in Warlord gives me a reactive (Backhand) that's off the GCD, ability to block without using a shield (so I can use my 2h swords or polearms!), and Recovery Posture to give me health every time I use an AP builder, as well as Sergeant's Order to yank people around with. A few points in Paladin gives Aggressive Block to buff those reactives, Retaliation (another reactive off the GCD), and Building Fury to add some more punch to finishers.

Depending on your level and the level of the mobs you're hunting, the gear you're wearing, as well as whether they're "full" mobs (1 mob in the group) or "swarm" mobs (several mobs in the group with lower health), you can typically pull several mobs at once and use the Plague Bringer + Shadow of Dread combo to spread your dots around, all of which will feed you some health, while you build up APs and drop all those Reaver AOE finishers to leave big patches of swirly black death all piled up on the ground under your mobs. You get a lot of armor from using a shield, but for general questing you can get away with a two handed sword/axe or polearm while using Combat Veteran from Warlord. You could even dual-wield if that's your thing. It gives the build a great Death Knight-y feel!

Thanks for great guide. I've been currently leveling thru instances as a Reaver/Warlord with 2h http://rift.magelo.com/en/soultree#9/69akSxiYO/89aA and it works pretty vell. As I mainly do PvP with my warrior, i don't wanna care about 2 set of gears (especially 1h+shield). I really like reaver and it works much better than my spec with Pally/Warlord aoewise.

Will be similar spec usable at lvl 50+ in SL, or should I drop 2h and go for some sort of Reaver/VK combo with sword&board for SL instances?

You'll definitely want to be Sword and Board, the Armor bonus from the Shield is critical. Once you hit 50 you won't be using a 2h tanking spec until you hugely outgear content at level 60.

Ok, thanks for input, i'll probably drop tanking in 50+ anyway. Even though Reaver is quite fun, Riftstalker is more enjoyable for me.

    Default Thank you

Just wanted to say thank you for a detailed and well explained guide. I played wow as a tank for years but only started rift a week ago. Getting to the Fae dungeon including the epic saga quests now so wanted to see how a rift tank build looked at level 19.

Thank you also for including macros as you level and details on how you should be playing at each level too.

    Awesome ;)

I do wish that they added an ability that reduced the GCD on all the Reavers DoTs like they have other DoT classes. I love the Reaver. Probably my favorite tank with all the disease we can spread but when I spend more time spreading dots then doing anything, its a little, I mean VERY clunky gameplay. I love all the dots and draining of mobs but it takes awhile to get everything up and rolling. Please give them something similar to the Inquisitor and Warlocks GCD abilities/passives. That would help the reaver, especially if your trying to add some hybridization to the class which from the looks on test, you guys are.

    Hey Primal,

What do you suggest as professions for this build?

    Thanks

Professions are irrelevant from a statistics point of view since none of them affect performance. It really doesn't matter which you take.

Blood Fevers cd gets so short that the solo builder ends up shadow, blood fever ,blood fever, blood fever .blood fever, and so on till shadow is back up around lvl 40

is this the best tank spec or is vk & paladin better. im also wondering how they hold aggro without the 350% threat generation buff that the cleric/rogue has.

This is intentional. Shock Pulse/Necrotic Wounds/Soul SIckness are in the macro only to be used when you are out of melee range and can't use Blood Fever

Define 'best'. I chose to write this guide for Reaver because I consider it to be the most flexibile and easiest tanking soul to level with, it has plentiful access to ranged threat generation and is great at picking up mobs which are spread out, both very important strengths. If you're interested in a more mathematical assessment of end-game tanking specs you can look at my tanking spreadsheet in my signature.

Warrior tanking abilities innately generate extra threat, which is further modified by talents like Sinister Intent, a Tier 7 Reaver talent. Warriors also generally do more DPS while tanking than Clerics or Rogues which helps generate extra threat. In general you should never lose aggro to DPS or Healers unless they significantly out-gear/out-level you and get a lucky string of crits on the pull.

alright. thats what i wanted to know. im wanting to play tank and noticed they did not have the buff like cleric/rogue. had a warrior earlier tanking and he/she could not maintain aggro becuase the DPS and me(other dps) were immediately taking aggro from that player. thanks for info and im definately gona play this. it reminds me a lot of the DKs from Wrath.loved that calss.
