    Default 61 Warlock in 3.6

    Warlock

The masters of damage over time abilities. Warlocks use the powers of Death and the Void to corrupt and torment their targets. Focusing on maintaining powerful dots and using hard hitting procs allow them to be deadly spell casters. High single target damage, dual targeting, good cleave, mobility, and plenty of utility is what defines Warlock as a strong choice for ranged Mage dps.

Main reference/source: Heartbeat's Warlock in three steps.

Key things have changed in 3.0 and 3.6, and a more community fielded opinion on what is best is needed and appreciated. That includes the spec, rotation, priority, and masteries. Constructive feedback/criticisms that explain what is wrong and offer alternatives is appreciated and wanted.

    Specs:
    61 Lock / 9 Necro / 6 Harb - Blazing Light
    61 Lock / 10 Necro / 5 Storm - f2p
    61 Lock / 10 Necro / 5 Chloro -f2p w/ Withering Vines
    Masteries: 62 - Healing Expertise, 64 - Methodical Destruction, 65 - Arcane Manipulation / Ethereal Blast
    Synergy Crystal: Eldritch
    Buffs: Warlock Armor, Lightning Blade

    The Warlock and the Void
    Critical Passives/Abilities

Warlock Armour ~ Mage Armor - Grants damaging abilities a 30% chance to reduce the cooldown of Consuming Agony, and make your next Consuming Agony within 8s instant and cost no mana.
Opportunity ~ Passive - Spell casts have a 10% chance to reduce the cast time of your next spell by 100%, mana by 40%, and global cooldown to 1s. igcd 3s. Used on Consuming Agony or Void Bolt.
Void Decimation ~ Passive - Increases the damage of your Void Bolt, Neddra's Torture, and Void Barrage by 15% for each death damage over time on the enemy.
Persist ~ 20s cooldown - Instantly refreshes your death damage over time abilities on the enemy. 20s Cooldown.
Void Barrage ~ 20s Cooldown - Channels a high amount of damage over 3s, as well as the first tick refreshing your death damage over time abilities on the enemy. Can move while channeling. Because of the high damage it will be used close to off cooldown every 20s. Under 50% when managing Death's Door it might be delayed 1 or 2 seconds at first.
Healing Expertise ~ Level 62 Mastery - Causes Dark Touch to also cast Life Leech and Neddra's Grasp, if know, to the enemy. Important change with 3.0. No more hard casting Life Leech, and Neddra's Grasp effectively has no cooldown.

These are the main mechanics of Warlock: Two procs to make a heavy hitting cast time ability instant. Main passive that causes your abilities to deal more damage if the target has your dots on them. Abilities that refresh/reapply your dots before they fall off, so you do not have to spend a lot of time constantly reapplying dots. And finally a new addition with 3.0 a mastery that allows for 3 abilities in one cast.

    Death Over Time
    DoTs, Conflux, and another refresh

Death's Door ~ 10s cooldown - A short 8s death damage over time spell that can only be applied if the target is below 50% hp. Damage increases the lower the target's health is. Your strongest dot and the focus of your refreshing below 50% target hp.

Conflux ~ 45s cooldown, OGCD - Causes your next 10 death dots to deal additional damage when applied or refreshed.
Defile ~ Instant - Death damage over 16s. Increases the crit chance of dots. Drains Charge
Dark Touch ~ Instant - Death damage over 16s. (With Healing Expertise also applies Life Leech and Neddra's Grasp)
Life Leech ~ 1.5s cast time - Death damage over 16s. Heals for 6% of your HP over that time.
Atrophy ~ Instant - Death damage over 16s. Increases each second.
Necrosis ~ Instant - Death damage over 14/16s. Necro spell and the focus of your refresh timing.
Blazing light ~ Instant - Life damage over 16s. Increases dodge chance by 10%. Does not effect Void Decimation. Harbinger spell.

Salvage Corruption ~ 5s cooldown - Removes and stores all of the Mage's death dots from the enemy onto the mage for 30s. No Global Cooldown. Used mainly to dual target and easily refresh second target dots. As well as target switching.
Deathly Pall ~ 5s cooldown - Applies all death dots removed and stored by Salvage Corruption to the enemy. Cannot be used to apply dots if nothing is stored.

    Agony and Torture
    Procs, Filler, and AOE

Consuming Agony ~ 10s cooldown, 4s cast time - Heavy hitting procced instant that's damage increases based on the number of death damage over time effects on the target. With Warlock's Armour it is instant and resets its cooldown. Ignoring its cooldown and cast time completely. Use them all asap as once Consuming Agony can proc another and so on.

Draining Bolt ~ 30s cooldown - High damage filler spell that increases by 20% for each death dot. Does more than a Consuming Agony when both have 5 dots buffing them. Also heals a little.
Neddra's Tortute ~ 8s cooldown - A delayed filler that does damage after 8s. It also explodes, if cleansed, dealing damage to the cleanser and debilitating them for 3s. Can occur a number of times equal to half the number of death dots plus 1 on the target. Max 4.
Neddra's Grasp ~ 10s cooldown - Deals death damage whenever the target uses an ability. 5 stacks. Apply with Dark Touch with Healing Expertise Mastery. Using this is only worth it if the target is consuming more than 3 stacks during the 15s up time.
Desecrate ~ 20s cooldown - Necro Spell. Consumes all the Mage's Deathly Calling stacks doing moderate damage for each one. Requires the Necro pet to apply Deathly Calling.
Void Bolt ~ 1.5s cast time, Primary Bolt - Lowest priory cast time filler, and secondary use for Opportunity procs, that does increase with damage via Void Decimation.

Arcane Manipulation ~ Level 65 Mastery 1, 30s cooldown - Will give you bonus damage every 30s.
Ethereal Blast ~ Level 65 Mastery 2, 30s cooldown - Does a lot of damage. More than most spells. Its cooldown is reduced by 3s every time you use a cast time or channeled ability. That includes when you use a proc to instant cast something.

Radiate Death ~ 20s cooldown - Spreads: Dark Touch, Neddra's Grasp, Life Leech, Atrophy, Necrosis, and Deathly Calling to up to 6 additional enemies around your target. You have to have the dots on the initial target. Used for AOEing and close range dual targeting/cleaving.
Mortality ~ 1m cooldown, 6s channel - Heavy aoe damage cooldown around the mage - be in melee basically. Heals you for the damage done, consumes charge and is immune to cc.
Devouring Shadows ~ 6s channel - Death damage to up to 8 enemies. Generates charge every second. Use to fill between Radiate Death and Mortality in pure aoe situations.

    The Darkness and Sacrifice
    Damage increasing cooldowns

Empowered Darkness ~ 1m cooldown - Increases damage by 50% for 15s. Gain 100 Charge. This is your big 1 minute line up with raid cooldowns. Hoping your supports will use their cooldowns at the right time is important. As well as holding yours if there is something coming up that will interrupt your dpsing/waste your cooldowns.
Sacrifice Life: Damage ~ 30s cooldown - Increase death damage by 20% and all other damage by 10% for 15s. Consumes 15% of your current health. A lesser damage buff.
Contaminate ~ Toggle - Increases the damage of dots by 30%. Causes dot casts to drain 20 charge and blocks dots from gaining charge. Used to fill the 15s gap of having neither of the other two damage increasers up. Will overwrite both of the others so do not cast at the wrong time.

Throughout all fights you will be maintaining one of the three buffs at any time. Empowered Darkness is your strongest at 50% to everything. It'll be lined up with Lava, Flaring, and Enrage for best use. Then you have Sacrifice Life: Damage and Contaminate. Sac. Life is 20% on most of your spells and only 10% on anything not death (Blazing Light). But Contaminate is 30% to your dots. Something to note that Contaminate is higher damage on your dots over Sac. Life.

    Destroy your Enemies
    Rotation

    Opener:
    Contaminate (before pull)
    Defile > Dark Touch > Necrosis > Atrophy (4s)
Empowered Darkness > Conflux > Channel Void Barrage (Inside Flaring and Lava)
    Blazing Light

    Buff Rotating:
    Empowered Darkness (15s) > Sacrifice Life: Damage (15s) > Contaminate (15s) > Sacrifice Life: Damage (15s) > Repeat

Because of random procs and the boss-to-boss viability of Neddra's Grasp the rest of your rotation is a priority based on what is more important. Then once you hit below 50% boss HP your priority changes to focus on Death's Door up time.

    Above 50% Priorities:
Conflux (ogcd) / Arcane Manip (ogcd)
    V
    Void Barrage every 20s
    V
Refresh Death DoTs every 14s (with Persist)
    V
    Ethereal Blast
    V
    Consuming Agony procs
    V
Refresh Neddra's Grasp with Dark Touch (if >3 consumed a cast)
    V
Refresh Blazing Light (after it falls off)
    V
    Spam/Filler
    Below 50% Priorities:
Conflux (ogcd) / Arcane Manip (ogcd)
    V
    Maintain 100% Death's Door every 8s
(rotating Void Barrage, Persist, Salvage/Pale or recast)
    V
    Ethereal Blast
    V
    Consuming Agony procs
    V
Refresh Neddra's Grasp with Dark Touch (if >3 consumes a cast)
    V
Refresh Blazing Light (after it falls off)
    V
    Spam/Filler
    More DoTs!
Double ticks & more Death's Door

    Double Ticking DoTs
All of your dots tick their damage every 2s. You can take advantage of this to squeeze out a little more damage via double ticking: Refreshing your dots on an odd number (after a tick) causes them to tick again immediately as they're applied.

Above 50% when using Persist is when you aim for the double ticks. Refreshing Necrosis at 1s optimally for the odd numbered tick.

Below 50% aim to refresh Death's Door at 1s with both Persist and Void Barrage to gain the double tick on Death's Door. If the boss hitting 50% and you immediately using DD lines up right - all of your other dots should also be on odd numbers and gain double ticks when you go for the double DD.

    Refreshing Death's Door
Persist and Void Barrage alone aren't enough to constanly refresh Death's Door. So for the third one you will either choose to recast it at 1s or use salvage/pale to pull it off at 1s and reapply. Using salvage/pale also pulls off and refreshes all of your other deaths dots early. Causing their damage to be recalculated with your current buffs.

The first time you will consider using salvage/pale is if on your first Death's Door is inconveniently just after you used a refresh and neither will be up in 8-7s. Using it will then allow your other refreshers to come off cd and start being used in conjunction with DD.

The second and every other time during your sub 50% rotation is where the importance that it pulls all of your death dots off comes in. What you do is dependent on what your current damage buff is. Remember that Contaminate does more for your dots, including Death's Door, than Sac. Life does. With that:
    - If you are in Empowered, use salvage/pale
    - If you are in Contaminate, and you previous refresh was Sac. Life, use salvage/pale
    - If you are in Sac. Life, and your previous refresh was actually in either of the other two, recast DD
Empowered > Contaminate > Sac. Life
Not using salvage/pale during Sac. Life allows all of your other dots to continue hitting harder than if you did. Also obviously if on your third DD refresh if all your other dots are actually falling off too somehow, and Persist and VB are on cd, use salvage/pale...

    Dual Targeting
    If only it was Blademark

New spec: 3/3 Flesh Rot. Use Arcane Manipulation too; you're going to be getting less cooldown reductions on ethereal blast (less Void Bolt casts) when you dual or triple dot. The change in spec allows for slightly more up time on your other target's dots. Saving you a gcd, or so, on your other target not having to refresh as often.

Actually dual targeting isn't necessarily hard. Above 50% hp. You will be using Salvage/Pale to refresh your second target dots when necrosis is at 1s optimally. Macroing salvage/pale to @focus and setting the target to your focus makes this an ease. 1s refresh isn't always going to work. If Void Barrage (a 3s channel) is coming off cooldown, you don't want to delay using it. So refresh early on your @focus target instead at 5/3s. Refreshing them early on an odd number tick is a less bad option than not refreshing and them falling off.

Below 50% on both targets your windows of refresh are a lot smaller. You will have to watch the 5s cooldown on salvage/pale now with Death's Door on your main and second target. Sometimes the timing is unlucky and you have your third dd refresh on main target, within that time of needing to refresh focus. When that happens just use it to refresh focus target and recast onto main. Otherwise salvage/paling between persist and void barrage refreshes will mean it'll be off cooldown. Probably.

    Utility

Choke ~ Interrupts and Debilitates for 5s. 30s cooldown
    Aversion ~ Interrupts. 10s cooldown
Mass Fear ~ Fears 5 enemies for 10s or until damage. 30s cooldown
Fear ~ 1.5s cast to fear 1 for 10s or until damage
Neddra's Essence ~ Reduces damage taken by 80% for 7s. 2 minute cooldown
Consumption ~ Necro Spell. Purges 1 buff and restores mana. 5s cooldown
Sacrifice Life: Mana ~ Restores 20% mana. Consumes 7% of current health
Break Free ~ CC break. 1 minute, 15s cooldown
Fading Light ~ CC break. 2 minute cooldown

QoL Changes I'd like to see in Warlock:

    Please:
    ~ Consuming Agony 1s gcd
    ~ Persist ogcd
~ Radiate Death on a shorter cd

    Maybe:
    ~ Maybe Death's Door ogcd
~ Salvage and Pale combined into one spell like old Ethereal Flux/Blast

This guide is wrong in so many points.
I'd advise every player, who doesn't already know how to lock to stick to Heartbeat's guide from Storm Legion for a gameplay tutorial.

never use neddra's grasp on its own as it doesnt count as a dot and therefor has a 1.5 second gcd. Rather use the fact that you skilled Healing expertise and apply Neddra's grasp via refreshing dark touch on your target. (If you do that on an odd number you produce another double tick which results in even more damage )

Would help to point out where so I can fix it. Since the majority of this is what is in heartbeat's guide...

It's also been two years and 2-3 Warlock effecting updates since he last updated it.

It's standard operating procedure around here to tell someone they are bad/doing something wrong without offering any alternative or how, in their opinion, the rotation should be performed. It's how you keep the e-peen strong. Lol

    rewrote whole thing

    would like clarification on:
~ which 65 mastery is actually better
~ draining bolt does more damage than CA
(1s gcd CA Opp proc > 1.5s gcd Draining > 1.5s gcd CA Armor proc) imo
but that's with AM because EB would just rather two CAs for cd reductions
    ~ anything wrong

But I expect hate instead of alternatives or corrections anyway.

just a question: i've a fresh 65 mage so i don't know how new WL can scale with high gear and raid buffs, but from my first tries i noticed that even with the new changes it seems 20% behind pyro and 30% harbinger. am i right or WL is viable in raids in any way?

It doesn't parse well on dummies because no DD or NG. Should be ahead of Pyro but behind Harb in raid environments.

Warlock is a blast, give it a shot, it actually does quite well. Notawaifu put together a nice guide .

Harski with all due respect, play what you like and I wish you well, but "don't even bother" is not helpful, not informative and frankly rather childish. Though I guess expected as Dwops pointed out earlier.

Warlock dps is really good if played right. In some fights it's the best due to múltiple dotting. In IA it's the best if there is no tank and you're top damage (I tanked MoM IA on my warlock), it's really good for soloing and open world too
