Default [2.1] (Raid DPS) Weaving Shaman

    Shaman 61 / Druid 10 / Inquisitor 5
    http://rift.magelo.com/en/soultree#Dg8/lkGBlhlkll4/n8

    General:
This is melee spec. It's rotation is based on 2 mechanics:
    • Frostbite: Your non-physical weapon attacks (NOP) increase your damage done with your next physical weapon attack (PHY) by %30. So, you have to weave your non-physical weapon attacks and physical weapon attacks one after another for max DPS.
    • Pattern of Violence: Your weapon attacks reduce the current cooldown of Massive Blow by 1.5s. So, you can use Massive Blow -which is your hardest hitting attack with a dot -after each ~6 weapon attacks (~6 secs)-.
    Buffs:
These hourly/permanent buffs must be kept up all time:
    • Armor of Devotion
    • Glory of the Chosen
    • Courage of the Panther
    • Furious Assault
    • Heart of the Frozen Sea
note: you can activate Courage of the Eagle first and then use Glory of the chosen and a Vengeance buff (explained below) to increase damage slightly. But you need to activate Courage of the Panther after buffing for max DPS.

You need to switch the following buffs accordingly whenever you are doing AOE or ST damage:
    • Vengeance of the Winter Storm (ST)
    • Vengeance of the Primal North (AOE)
Combat Buffs that should be timed for max DPS window:
    • Deep Freeze: always use it before Massive Blow (ST) or Strike of the Maelstrom (AOE)
    • Rage of the North: try to time it with Flaring Power for max DPS.
    • Rush of Strength: try to use it 3 attacks (*) after Massive blow for max DPS.
(* = NOP + PHY + NOP --> for max Massive Blow damage with Brutalize.)
    Survivability:
    • Glacial Shield: Prefer to use it when engaging multi mobs
    • Shield of Oak: Prefer to use it when taking too much damage.
    • Summon: Faerie Healer: Pretty much useless but you can use in-between phases for a very very little help to your healers.
    • Windwalk: Use it when you need to run fast.
    Attacks:
These are the non-physical weapon attacks (must be used before physical):
    • Avalanche Strike (AOE)
    • Frozen Wrath (ST/AOE)
    • Glacial Strike (ST)
    • Icy Blow (ST)
    • Jolt (ST): only use if procs
    • Lightning Hammer (ST)
These are the physical weapon attacks (must be used after non-physical):
    • Combined Effort (ST)
    • Crushing Blow (ST)
    • Massive Blow (ST)
    • Strike of the Maelstrom (AOE)
These weapon attacks are DPS-loss so don't use them:
    • Fervent Strike (ST)
    • Eruption of Life (ST)
    Ranged Filler:
    • Ekkehard's Grasp
    • Vex (?)
    Utilities:
    • Ageless Ice: Instant %7 mana Regen.
    • Bitter Wind: Ranged Interrupt off-GCD.
    • Numbing Cloud: Ranged Heal & Absorption debuff with %100 up-time.
    • Ride The Lightning: 20m Charge with AOE damage.
    • Snowbank: Ranged snare with %100 up-time.
    Macros:
    NOP Macro:
    Code:
    #show Frozen Wrath
    suppressmacrofailures
    cast Frozen Wrath
    cast Glacial Strike
    cast Jolt
    cast Icy Blow
    cast Ekkehard's Grasp
    PHY Macro:
    Code:
    #show Massive Blow
    suppressmacrofailures
    cast Combined Effort
    cast Massive Blow
    cast Crushing Blow
    cast Ekkehard's Grasp
    BOOM Macro:
    Code:
    #show Rage of the North
    suppressmacrofailures
    cast Rage of the North
    cast Deep Freeze
    Rotation:
Priority is always using NOP before PHY:
    • NOP priorities: Frozen Wrath > Glacial Strike > Lightning Hammer > Jolt > Icy Blow
    • PHY priorities: Combined Effort > Massive Blow > Crushing Blow
ST Rotation (don't forget to turn Vengeance of the Winter Storm on):
    (1) NOP -> (2) PHY -> (3) Lightning Hammer -> (4) BOOM x2 -> (5) PHY -> (6) NOP -> (7) PHY -> (8) NOP -> (9) Rush of Strength + PHY -> Weave according to priorities

AOE Rotation (don't forget to turn Vengeance of the Primal North on):
    (1) Frozen Wrath -> (2) BOOM x2 -> (3) Strike of MaelStrom -> (4) Avalanche Strike -> Keep weaving Strike of Maelstrom and Avalanche Strike one after another
(you can switch the order of Avalance Strike and Strike of Maelstrom at start for a possible unlimited Frozen Wrath keep up)

My key layout (which is compatible with current kalert set):
    Code:
    1: Interrupt
    2: Lightning Hammer
    3: NOP Macro
    4: PHY Macro
    Shift+3: BOOM Macro
    Shift+4: Rush of Strength
    E: Avalanche Strike
    R: Strike of the Maelstrom
    Z: Snowbank
    X: Numbing Cold
    Karuulalert:
I have made the karuulalert alerts for this build which shows you which key to press according to my keyboard. You can change the keys but you need to change the alerts together:

    Summary:
This spec does very good AOE damage and a very stable ST damage.

note: Ranged ST DPS with this spec is about %40 of your current ST melee DPS: Ekkehard's Grasp.

Don't put Lightning Hammer in a macro like that. You are better to use Icy Blow or Eruption of Life as your non physical filler

Normally, I agree. But I put it there for the priority and rotation purposes. It's not designed to be a filler (although most macros end with a filler).

Would 5/5 Speak Softly scale better? At pretty standard Expert gear (3700 SP no pot/stone) I noticed a tooltip drop of about 5-10 damage across the board. I imagine with higher gear, Speak Softly will outperform the flat 5% damage. Thoughts?

The build has built-in base crit rate %20 for magic %10 for physical attacks. You get another %10 flat crit in the raids and most 60s have at least %10 flat crit rate already. Basically, you already have -in raid- %40 magic crit rate and %30 physical crit rate this is without the Rage of the North mechanics.

SP and CP scales better with this build.
Therefore %10 SP > %10 Wis, so Speak Softly is DPS-loss.

I meant 5/5 Speak Softly over 5/5 Guiding Hand. Guiding Hand just gives a flat 5% damage, but Speak Softly increases our Wisdom, which increases our SP and a bit of crit as well. Admittedly not a lot, but I figured it was worth mentioning that I was seeing roughly the same DPS numbers with fairly low end gear with Speak Softly as I was with Guiding Hand.

I honestly haven't noticed any macro lag with it. However, I am being lazy.

Keep in mind that you can only use it once every 30 seconds; thus, it is not particularly needed to have in your macro to ensure uptime.

And re LH in macro... there's simply no reason to have it in there; you will face uptime issues, not to mention the inevitable clipping of its dot.

improved jolt is nearly always availible since the change to 1s GCD so you can put that into your non-phys macro with icy blow. this will free up a keybind for LH

I tried using your karuulalert set but it needs some explaining

(Sorry for all the questions in advance)

there was a row of 4 icons with 2 showing attacks and 2 showing buffs, which attack do I use when they both pop up different things? and why show the buffs like brutalize etc?

I modified it a bit so that all attack icons were in 1 stack which will just show what button you need to press next but I think I have to rearange the layers a little to make it work

Layers I'm going to try using:

    FW
    CE
    LH
    non-phys (including jolt/icyblow)
    RotN
    Deep freeze
    MB
    Rush of Str
    phys

as it goes down the layers this *should* give you the optimal rotation with a few minor exeptions (RotN and deep freeze might get separated from MB after 1 minute of doing the rotation) although as I think about it more, your 2nd icon is for cooldowns isn't it? Is the de-synching issue the reason?

I think you might be over complicating Shaman dps. I did this when originally theorycrafting it and ran into many problems. It seems to be a lot simpler (and more effective) to throw everything into a couple of macros, and have certain cooldowns separate.. I'm really not sure what you're trying to accomplish by putting it into Karuul Alerts unless you're suddenly going to start using Eruption of Life which does, if at all, marginally more dps but is a PITA to keep up with. Obviously I don't use Karuul Alerts so if what you're doing works for some people, more power to you

The main challenges of this build are watching your lightning hammer and timing your Rush of Strength properly. I've found that Brutalize does not clip so long as you have one GCD between your first and second massive blow. don't need three as that slows things down and you get less use out of the cooldown.

For Example: (well into the rotation without deep freeze up) Massive blow ->Lightning Hammer -> Rush of Strength -> Massive Blow.

Also, having an ability like Glacial Strike that checks with the server each time you try to use it causes extreme macro lag, so take it out and put it on a separate key. The way I have my nonphysical macro set out is, without getting too fancy,

    Rage of the North
    Frozen Wrath
    Jolt
    Icy Blow
    Ekkehard's Grasp

While we're at it, let's get the physical macro down as well

    Rage of the North
    Massive Blow
    Combined Effort
    Crushing Blow

Jolt is very rarely used without being improved, so it's not a big deal. To min max it, take jolt out and use it instead of the nonphys macro when it's procced (which it will be most of the time).

In terms of Physical Priorities, Massive Blow should be higher than Combined effort once Combined Effort is applied. Massive Blow hits harder, has a dot, and is generally very appealing to the eye. Combined Effort is only higher priority if it isn't already on the boss. (AKA the beginning of a pull.) The way it would go is

(Pre-Pull) Rage of the North -> (Pre-Pull) Avalanche Strike (or use your charge when beginning the fight) -> Combined Effort -> Nonphys ->Phys -> Lightning Hammer ->Rush of Strength -> Deep Freeze -> Phys -> Nonphys. This rotation uses Deep Freeze on a Massive Blow and an Improved Jolt.

All in all, I think you may have overcomplicated the whole thing. Not sure if the intention was to scare away new players, but seems to look that way. My main suggestion is to simplify it a bit and remove the opportunity for user error. Thanks much for taking the time to write up a guide though, it should be very helpful to the community .

Also, apologies to the community for not sharing any of my latest theorycrafting on Shaman. I assure you it was simple laziness after exams and nothing more

Sorry if I'm at all incoherent, I'm up late. Since yah know, Duty Calls

PS - You can send a private message to a forum moderator containing the raw content of what you want your guide to be and they can edit it for you. It very much came in handy for me when I realized having vex IN the rotation was a dps loss and needed to edit.

KA does not complicate things, we are only using KA in order to simplify the process of executing the priority rotation. by having the abilities prioritized in KA (by using layers) we can just look at the icon and know what attack we need to use next without focusing on it.

I'll post my version of the KA set later tonite when I get home from work, I've tweaked it to be slightly different and has let me get my shaman DPS to within 500 of my inquisitor dps with only my 15 mintues of testing using the KA alerts. It literally tells me exactly which button I need to push in order to maintain the optimal rotation (including cooldowns)

It does have its drawbacks but they aren't any worse than the macro's that you have shown in this post. for instance, with the KA I set up, after 1 minute of combat there is no way to garuntee that massive blow will be used immediately after rage of the north, but I CAN garuntee that if both are availible to use it will tell you to use RotN before massive blow. You macro'd RotN into your phys and magical macro's so it will just pop whenever, basically the same thing.

I feel that with some improvements I can make the rotation even more reliable with KA. Again though, all KA is doing is showing the icon and hotkey button that I should push next in order to maintain the rotation

I don't find this true at all, it might be a latency issue so everyone should test it out for themselves

CE is always higher priority than MB because the length of the CE debuff is the same as its cooldown. this means that whenever CE is off cooldown its also dropped off the boss thus higher priority.

what are you basing this observation on? If anything setting up a copy-paste KA macro that will tell you exactly what button to push should attract new players to shaman... I don't see anyone scared away?

I was about to come to same conclusion for my raid build. In experts, Jolt can still not proc in time but in raids it procs about %100 of the time.

You just need to press the key on the most right (my keys are written in OP.)

I made it so that it makes you click on the buff with perfect timing. For example, the brutalize icon is there to remind you not to use rush of strength early therby overwriting your brutalize which is a dps-loss

Yeap. 2nd icon is to avoid de-synching. But I'm gonna update my kalerts later today/tomorrow since they get bugged when there are 2 or more shamans in group/raid.

Kalerts are there so that it shows me what to click when to click for best possible dps.

Actually with the new Furious Assault, your GCD decreases to 1 sec. Brutalize takes 3 seconds. So you need 3 GCDs between Massive Blow and Rush of Strength.

Combined Effort has higher priority than Massive Blow since it should be used from CD to CD to increase Massive Blow's damage. Also, I don't understand Avalanche Strike in a ST Rotation.

Well my intention was to aim for best possible DPS output. But everything can be optimized. I will send pm to mods when I have the latest guide. Thanks for the tip.

I haven't leveled quite high enough to contribute just yet, but I wanted to say thanks to everyone adding content to this thread. I'm learning a ton about several different aspects of play just by following along and adopting aspects of the macro writing methodology along with play style explanations.

Coming from multiple other MMOs, it's pretty alien to find an actual conversation going where constructive criticism is evaluated for merit and discussed rather than immediately devolving into a flame war.

Thanks to all for putting yourselves out there and providing resources to the rest of us!

It would appear that way, but in practical testing that does not hold true. If you want to test it, go to a dummy hit massive blow, count the ticks of brutalize. Wait for Massive blow to come off CD, hit it again, then rush of strength, lightning hammer, massive blow, all the while counting brutalize ticks. The dot is applied slightly after the damage and takes a bit less than 3 seconds to finish. I tested this practically a few times to be sure before I brought this out.

Also on the Kalerts, I have barley messed with it at all. Last time I tried it I spent 2 hours figuring it out and couldn't find any good guides anywhere. Gave me quite the headache and I uninstalled it. If it shows you what to hit for the priority list though, then that should work just fine and be simpler than the macro system I'm using. It just requires having KAlerts which not everyone does. So to me, someone who doesn't use KAlerts, it looks a bit complex.

This is wrong, putting Jolt in a macro has always been a dps loss and still is. If you don't want to minmax thats fine but you can't seriously say its not a dps loss.
