Tanks are great to run/hoard objectives, as they will last longer under dps pressure from the opposition.

From this point on, players have varying perspectives regarding tanks in pvp.

Many "troll" hybrid builds (designed specifically to harass/annoy pvpers, but not contribute any meaningful dps) utilize a heavy dose of Voidknight in their construction.

Tanks used to be great fun in pvp, but over time Trion nerfed their dps output in pvp and tweaked a few other things. The shield/block mechanic for Paladin, for example, is MUCH less effective in pvp than in pve settings. I've noticed I would rarely get a shield perk proc unless multiple foes were targeting me- even if I was specifically fighting an opponent that I KNEW used physical damage output.

Voidknights have better dps and CC & given the ranged game Rift pvp has become, would most likely perform better than Paladin in pvp currently.

But ALWAYS remember this: its your game too- don't let others discourage you from finding any class/spec/method that suits your playstyle.

short answer - YES,viable! (but you have to know what you are doing-othervise,do NOT tank at all - just roll a full DPS or support/ healer than)
and YES, for warriors, void knight is almost everywhere a better option than paladin. paladin is better for carrying stuff around (flags, stones) due to its solo self heal survivability. VK is the warfront front line organizer. and played correctly greatly contributes to victory.

some tanks and tank hybrids are viable at some tasks in pvp, but rarely are they something you run as first choice.

I often use a VK hybrid in pvp, but only when the situation requires it.

Something to remember when tanking in warfronts, specifically in Black Garden, Ghar Station, and Library:

Rune Vessels/Fang/Eggs tick for a PERCENTAGE of your MAX HEALTH and they ignore mitigation. This means that it's actually MORE difficult for a healer to keep you up through Fang/Vessel ticks when you have a larger health pool. Lets say any given tick hits for 10% of your max health every 3 seconds. (This isn't the case because the ticks gradually increase but we are using an example for ease of math) Your average tank will be taking 15k damage every three seconds, requiring a healer dedicate 5k HPS to keeping you alive. Your average DPS will be taking about 7k damage every 3 seconds, requiring about 2.3k HPS to keep you alive. Also, in Ghar Station the eggs give a DPS boost making it even more important for DPS to carry over tanks.

In the current meta that is absolutely a waste of a rogue.

Depends entirely on the Warfront. Let's look at standard Black Garden:

    1) Drop Flashback on the Fang's spawn point.
    2) Stay close-ish to the spawn.
    3) Use PotP or any blink ability at least once every 8 sec.
    4) Watch as no one on the other team can take the Fang. Ever.

See also: standard Karthan Ridge, Codex, and (to a lesser extent) Whitefall.

Would hardly call indefinite objective denial a waste. RS has enough CC-breakers (SS, Flashback, Break Free) to maintain a phase shift once per 8 sec, and given that Planar Vortex is a passive AoE it won't matter if you're CCed between those 8 sec or not.

In a close match against even teams all you are doing is delaying the eventual pickup by one team.

In a match that is heavily swinging one side or the other, you are just delaying the pickup until the dominant side wipes the not so dominant side. The likelihood of changing the outcome of a match is incredibly small, whereas a good physician or marksman can make sure your team is the dominant one.

Carrying stones in Whitefall, holding down points, and wasting opponents damage are all benefits of playing tank. Imo unless you are mostly self sufficient though you're going to drag down your team by not putting out heals or dps. so either you have to be very very tanky or be able to heal/cc/run away and heal up, or contribute significantly in heal or dps if you aren't holding a flag. most tanks do not meet the criteria

It's not an entry level pvp strategy, especially if you don't have proper tank gear first.

Trying to tank warfronts in bolstered gear is the worst idea. I see this all the time, full tank spec with 90k health and dies as fast as a dps, while doing zero damage.

The WF bolster does not automatically give you tanking gear.

if you are a bad player yes, if you are good, competent dps or heals is always 1000 times better than a tank
