DPS(e) is your damage done divided by the total length of the fight. DPS is damage done divided by your own active time.

As an example, blowing everything at the start and then taking a dirt nap for the rest of the encounter will lead to a high DPS number but a low DPS(e) one.

DPS (e) is the accurate one that you should use to compare with other players. Like Mirissi said, DPS can be inflated by blowing everything than not doing anything for the rest of the fight, so it is obviously inaccurate for comparing DPS.

DPS = your damage divided by your time
DPS(e) = your damage divided by total encounter time

If you're comparing across different raids, I suggest using the DPS (e) on the raidrifts website. ACT parses can vary +/- 100 dps depending on how people start and stop their combat logs during encounters.
