Thumbs up Planar Crafting for 3.3!

So, by now I'm pretty sure you've been wondering what Planar Crafting is exactly and why you, an awesome Rift player should care.

We thought it might be a good idea to share some more information about it and to let you know it will be available for testing on PTS very soon. We will be putting a special test merchant inside the Dummy Foundry with the appropriate recipes and materials as well.

Ocho is going to be setting up some scheduled playtests so we can get your feedback early and make changes as needed to get you a fun and rewarding system to supplement the existing crafting content.

Here's a breakdown of what you can generally expect with this system, but please keep in mind that this is -as always- a work in progress and is subject to change without notice at any time:

Planar Crafting, a new sub-system has been added to Rift, allowing chosen professions to make new fishing poles, dimension items and powerful upgradeable weapons, armor & accessories!

Using the weekly quest rewarded rift lures, players can open a rift, complete it and can possibly obtain the highly coveted and rare material used in the Planar Crafting recipes.

This rare resource can also be obtained by fishing with the thematically appropriate fishing pole.

The rift lures only work in Taken Glacier, but the items can be crafted anywhere.

All of the weapons, armor and accessories crafted can be upgraded at least once.

Besides the amazingly awesome amount of common crafting materials that are handed out via the crafting rifts, players also have a chance to obtain rare dimension items, rare tokens and rare crafting materials.

Crafting rifts are back. New upgradeable weapons, armor and accessories. Two piece set bonuses on the armor. New dimension items. New planar themed fishing poles and lures.

Question - can these crafting rifts be reasonably soloed? (Not that I mind en masse crifting runs, everyone benefits!)

Only if you want to! It's not like the Stan lure at all, it's just a chance to catch one of these *while* you happen to be fishing.

These are similar to the original Crafting Rifts, so yes you can do them solo. Rewards will be better in a group and of course the better you do completing the rift itself.

This rare resource can also be obtained by fishing with the thematically appropriate fishing pole.
So this means we'll have more than one type of fishing pole (no more using previous pole to make new pole) and we have to use one that matches whatever item we're fishing for?

Correct, but only if you want a chance to obtain the thematically appropriate crafting materials. These do not trivialize the existing poles in the game, they supplement them.

In theory, planar fishing poles sound like a great idea. In reality, it also sounds like another RNG grind fest where those who don't (ever) have good RNG will resort to endlessly running crafting rifts trying to chase this elusive mat...so exchanging one grind for another.

We won't have to fish up more pole recipes, will we? Will those come from Bob, or the trainer, or anyone that isn't a pool of water?

Now that I've had a slight break from fishing (only 2500 last week), I can almost bear the thought of fishing again, but if it's a pole/recipe combo even remotely like the super secret lure...ugh.

Very much looking forward to crafting rifts again, and if those rare dimension items are some of the same that are being fished up with the Super Secret Lure, I may never fish again! Yay!

Nope! These are just other collectable poles, nothing more. The fact that you have a chance to get some materials from them is a bonus. It will always be ideal to go out into the world and do the rifts, versus trying to gather materials via fishing.

Will the parts from fishing be tradable?

If so that greatly increases the draw of fishing bots and will mean either they are so rare that honest players won't get them or common enough for honest players to get but will be flooded by bots.

If the parts aren't tradable, but the end products are, you've made an entire craft system that will be dominated by those that cheat.

Unless you have a way to very easily detect and eradicate fishing bots, don't incorporate it in this AT ALL.

Any chance we can turn in the original crafting lures, say at a 5 to 1 ratio and get the new lures?

Can't wait! Although, I'm a little concerned over the supply for mats once these pop up. But, will need to see everything on PTS first.

Maybe too much of an increase on some mats making their value drop considerably? It does say "amazingly awesome amount of common crafting materials " in your original post. Some things like leather, pelagic fragments, brisket, fish..etc are already commonly going at or below vendor cost on the GB AH; even Sarleaf and Thalasite have gone down the last few weeks. Though I guess it depends how many mats are used on the new recipes and how "awesome" the payouts really are with the rifts.

There could also be the opposite problem with the "special" mats if they're too rare... like Jonus said, we'll just have to wait and see the system once its on the pts
