It depends on how in depth you want to go. If you want to play a certain song (e.g. Fur Elise), it isn't that hard, but learning how to learn that song in a few days or learning a song like one of Ligeti's Etudes (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1ZTaiDHqs5s), that are meant to be very hard, that is hard.

However, as it has been said, piano is one of the easiest instruments to learn music theory on because it uses a lot of it and it's not too hard to play notes or chords on, compared to a brass instrument for example where you need to learn how to play notes correctly.

Some people have a really good ear for music. Usually they can pluck out a tune without a lesson. If you can do that you will most likely be able to become great at it.

Grab a midi/use keyboard, load up ableton live, cubase or protools and some sassy vsti s and have fun

Ahh Learning intervals and scales will help this process immensely though. Playing by ear isn't some sort of magic trick you are born with

its actually quite simple you can learn a basic song in a day you just have to learn the keys/notes
