The Vigil are often seen as the all powerful Gods who created Telera and decide the destiny of it's peoples. When the Rifts came some wondered why the Vigil allowed allowed Regulos to destroy so many and did not intervene until the last moment. If the Vigil cared so much then why didn't they themselves stop Regulos for it seemed to be within their power. The Vigil have never offered up an explanation but some Telerans believe it may be because they are not as all-powerful as some might be led to believe and even the Vigil themselves are answerable to a higher power. Of course this is all heresy and there are only a smattering of myths, legends and unverifiable evidence to back up this theory.
There have been accounts of beings appearing to certain powerful Ascended and granting them boons to their already vast abilities or in some instances reducing their prowess in battle, what some Telerans call "nerfing".
Some believe these beings created all things, even the Vigil themselves and decide on a whim whom they will grant their favor to and to whom they will incur their wrath or "nerf". Since they seem to find great joy (if beings such as these even experience joy the same as you or I) in doing these things on a whim they are sometimes referred to as "The Developers". The term "Developer" is used to indicate any seemingly random occurrence that has far reaching consequences that just what's occurring in the here and now. Some Telerans believe the Developers are Trickster Gods and that a lesson is to be learned from them, others think they are the epitome of evil, worse than Regulos himself in that they seem to take delight in causing as much havoc in the various classes of the Ascended as possible. There seems to be no rhyme or reason for their actions but they definitely have an interest in Telera. When the Vigil are asked about these things an answer is rarely forthcoming but once an answer was given.
Shyla Starhearth once asked this question and was told that answer would be given, but at a price. This information could never become public but because she had been loyal, she would be granted an answer on this subject just this once. The following account is from her journals which were discovered upon her death by the Defiant Orphiel Farwind.
"The Vigil are not self created but they themselves were created by a race of beings called "Trion". Trion created the Vigil and all of Telera including it's inhabitants. They then set the Vigil over this new world as caretakers and seemingly left. But then the Vigil started to make mistakes (or so some whisper) and allowed Regulos to enter the planes and destroy all of Telera while they (the Vigil) squabbled amongst themselves over what should be done. Trion intervened and instructed the Vigil to create immortal demi-god Telerans (as punishment for the lack of action on their part) to save the world. Knowing the Vigil had a bias against certain races the Trion put it into the heart and mind of one brilliant Teleran called **phie* F**w*nd (the text containing the name has been partly lost due to the ravages of time) to find a means of Ascension without consulting the Vigil. This of course angered the Vigil but what could they do as they themselves were answerable to a higher power? Trion realized that the Vigil's Ascended called "Guardians" could not stop Regulos themselves but would need help and so the Defiants were "born"". --the account ends here.
There are some Telerans who ask why Trion didn't simply step in a save their world but this line of thought is not in harmony with the overall purpose of Trion as "Developers". They develop or bring about change in Telerans (for good or ill) so that people will rely upon themselves and their own abilities rather than Gods. This may seem contradictory to some but nothing Trion has ever done has made much sense to the Ascended. There are of course those who actually worship the Developers and heap praises upon them no matter their actions and there are others who curse them (albeit in hushed tones) and blame them for all the ill in the world. The Developers (shortened to Devs) are given the nickname "Dev-ill" or "Devils" as they have come to be known down through time. However it must be said this name is not completely fair.
There have been certain notable events in the lives of the Ascended (referred to as "Patches") where they were granted great boons to their abilities and allowed them to overshadow other Ascended who followed different callings. Then there have been reduction in abilities (called nerfs) that have caused some of the Ascended to cry out (commonly referred to as QQ) for these unfair reductions in abilities. The Trion seem to be neither Good nor Evil, they simply are.
Are they benevolent, are they Trickster Gods (imparting hard lessons upon others as a teaching method) or do they really care at all? If one were to define the word "contradiction" Trion would be the first entry.
What does the future hold for Telera, the Ascended and the Vigil? No one knows. But some whisper that Trion is tiring of the Vigil's petty squabbles and part of their reason for creating Ascended is to replace the obviously biased Vigil with a new race who might look after Telera in a more beneficial way. Of course this is only whispered in Defiant strongholds and something a Guardian would dismiss out of hand any way.
[My hand grows tired and my brain weary young seeker from imparting this secret knowledge. I shall continue on the morrow unless I am struck down by some seemingly random occurrence (which is what seemingly happened to Shyla Starhearth shortly after this account was imparted to her). One thinks that the Vigil had a hand to play in this and so I must be careful myself lest I fall victim to them as well]
