Default new player qq: chain/leather tank build?

    Riftstalker/Bladedancer/Saboteur?

    please give reasons

I know mainly Riftstalker for defense, but I'd like a bomb-proof build with lots of hate and aoe. Just wondering if anybody has played or parsed this build, or if there were a combination better suited for my purposes, which is basically MT or tank-mezzer.

started as a bard, really enjoying it. thanks for reading.

    Short answer: no.

Long answer: the only things that Bladedancer and Saboteur have to offer to a tank are avoidance and threat.

You can hold threat in any tank spec, and having more threat than the minimum required does not provide any benefit.

And as for avoidance, well... it's worthless compared to health. Boss damage is very high, and so is healer output-- in practice, this means that tanks only die to burst damage, which means that effective health is drastically more valuable than avoidance.

61 Riftstalker/8 Ranger/7 Bard is the only tank spec worth using.

only one? really? you wouldn't even put tactician in?

kind of disappointing, I thought there would be more leeway for creativity

Tactician is worse than you'd think, due to the way that armor and resistance modifiers stack.

Avoidance tanking just doesn't work like Muspel said so you are basically either going for maximum buffer which is the 61 rs, 8 ranger, 7 bard spec or you sacrifice some tanking capability for extra utility. For example 61 rs, 12 bd, 3 bard gives double interrupt and side steps, both of which can be useful tools as long as the incoming damage doesn't become too big of a problem.

persoanlly i run 61rs/5tact(for torrent pulling)/10bard, but those 2 are basically the only solid tank options, with the ranger version giving more hp over better ranged pulling

Better ranged pulling? Place memory capture -> Shadow blitz -> Recall. Best pull in the game. Or just blink in and planar disruption. I can't recall a situation where you'd want to have "solid" range pulling, just auto attack one mob and grab them when they are close to you.

It's not exactly a matter of creativity. Rift is great in that you can be as creative as you want and still have it work. What matters to most people, though, is the best way to do something. There's a huge difference between good enough and best (that's probably a quote from someone)
