Default Nightblade/Riftstalker PVP build and rotation

So, I just recently discovered how great pvp is in this game (when I don't get a braindead team on random), and have been experimenting with builds. Overall, I've found NB/RS to be the most enjoyable, and at level 52 I'm spec'd 43nb/25rs/0sin. Being NB heavy allows me a pretty substantial bit of dps when I get ebon fury and scourge of darkness up, and then throwing in RS buffs/debuffs at the same time makes me practically indestructible if I catch an enemy player on their own. On top of that, I can just throw Twilight Transcendence if things get bad and plane shift my way out or pull ahead if I'm being DPSed down too fast.

However, I've ran into issues against straight harbinger mages for no apparent reason, I just can't get them down quick enough. Sometimes I kill them with >2k health left, sometimes I get killed with DoTs and procs, and sometimes we both die or they outright kill me. As far as fighting toe-to-toe they're really the only spec I have trouble against and I can't figure out why their defense seems so ridiculous compared to anyone else I fight.

    Here's my current setup: http://rift.magelo.com/en/soultree#y/wkkkFl9a9E/ttay5kg

I just realized I didn't have any points in Fire/Death Attunement, Planar Boost, or Shadow Guard, so I think I'm going to do some refining soon anyways.

So, any protips on skill rotations or build adjustments?

Harbinger is essentially the mage's answer to NB/RS.

http://www.rifthead.com/ability/-54355690/planar-shield - every few second you do a lot less damage. Stack fiery spikes to remove these quickly for little damage loss.

http://www.rifthead.com/ability/-584...ioned-response - resets every time the mage is crit or chance on being hit when below 50% hp. No way to counter this except to just power through.

http://www.rifthead.com/trait/1322/healing-reflex - chance on being hit to passively heal for a chunk of health. No way to counter this except to just power through.

Certain Harb/Chloro specs should outright kill you 1v1 due to the insane survivability and self heals.

For your spec I would start here: http://rift.magelo.com/en/soultree#wgFmGOGik4/t9J5cFg/A

This has the 3 teleports, Twilight Transcendence and Planar Refuge.

Never get toughened soul in the RS tree for PvP. The only physical damage you will face is MM types. There's a few more souls that use physical damage, but they're weak at PvP.

All of the best PvP souls use elemental damage, so counter that instead. Exceptional Resilience is a fantastic way to do that.

Planar Vortex is bad. You shouldn't be in guardian phase except when running away. Do not get this ability.

For leveling up with this spec you have to choose how much offensive ability versus defensive ability.

For max offensive you would end up with this at 60: http://rift.magelo.com/en/soultree#w...lj90/t9J5cFE/A

For max defensive but still damaging you'd go: http://rift.magelo.com/en/soultree#w...k4/t9J5aGyB8/A

Remember if you want to be healed you can always go 4 into tactician.

Only real tips I have is to make sure to use a 5/5 heat retention on your Scourge of Darkness. Don't ever use primal strike, Twilight Force hits harder, snares and puts a 10% damage buff on them. Stack 5 stacks of Fiery Spike on healers or hard targets to help you kill them. I'm sure you already know the rest of what I would tell you.

Wasn't really thinking about the planar vortex thing, I forgot that only applied to the tanking stance. I'll definitely be taking that off and also the toughened soul points to put in elsewhere.

And yeah, I noticed that about primal strike, without points into primal death it hits just the same as TF and doesn't give me the slow and debuff for more damage, plus it's a melee skill while TF has range, so it seems like a really useless skill.

I've got fiery spike on my builder macro and it's my spam button so I can be sure to get maximum stacks all the time, with phantom blow to get the buff up every time it's off cooldown. Should I trade FS for Twilight Force maybe, and use FS only when I get on a new target or need to refresh heat retention/stacks for Blazing Strike? Or is Fiery Spike still the best option for the stacked bleeds? On the other hand, it seems Twilight Force would be the best option for a burst simply because of the upfront damage, anyways.

I currently have Dusk to Dawn on its own button so I can root when I need it, plus to get the nightrage buff up. However, I can see that this would be more efficient to have on a spam macro from a DPS perspective simply because of the buff it gives and a considerable amount of upfront damage.

I'm also saving my planar skills to close distances and stop people who are running away, but with the pretty huge buff you get from shift skills I think these would also be best on a macro for every 10 seconds or so to maximize DPS. Currently my Shadow Blitz is on an AoE macro as well. So maybe I should just combine all of them except Shadow Shift and use that as a constant buff macro?

And I need to get SoD into my rotation more I think. Right now it's residing in an Ebon Fury macro with Dusk Strike and Twilight Force for bursts and I rarely put it up in favor of Blazing Strike. I see that SoD would be more DPS over the long term easily though.

I think a lot of it will just come with practice over time, but I'm starting to take into account buffs and things I hadn't really thought about before. Thanks for the tips!

Here are my macros at the moment as well:

    Builder
    #show Fiery Spike
    cast Phantom Blow
    cast Fiery Spike

    Ebon Fury
    #show Ebon Fury
    cast Scourge of Darkness
    cast Ebon Fury
    cast Dusk Strike
    cast Twilight Force

    Phase button
    #show Shadow Assault
    cast Shadow Assault
    cast Shadow Stalk

    AoE
    #show Fiery Chains
    cast Fiery Chains
    cast Weapon Flare
    cast Shadow Blitz
    cast Fiery Spike

(To answer some possible questions on the macros)
The Ebon Fury macro is Fury, SoD, then damage skills so I can be sure to get maximum damage from the free Dusk Strikes, and Twilight Force in case my target gets out of range to allow me to continue getting some hits in before I root or jump.

And having Shadow Blitz on my AoE button is to ensure I can stay in range of at least one target to use weapon flare, since it's a melee skill while Fiery Chains is ranged but with a CD. Fiery Spike is just filler for closing in if I'm not able to hit with Chains.
