Default SP vs SC Question (Redux)

So yeah, there have been a lot of theorycrafting and calculation about the issue of SP vs SC, and we agree that SP is mostly better than SC.

But I remember seeing calculations about a cut-off point where SC became almost as good as SP, yet there were many different numbers flying about.

    My 2 questions are:

    1. What is that breakpoint, i.e. at what Spell Power level does Spell Crit start to give more DPS than more SP?

    2. Also, is this is breakpoint still viable with the introduction of the SC soft/hard caps?

Anyone who told you there's a breakpoint is wrong.

It's theoretically possible to stack "too much" SP relative to your level of crit, but there is no magic number.

    let me rephrase

stack focus until you are at focus cap
stack int until you are at soft cap
    stack spell power after

Get crit to 25-30%, use Insignia of the Deep, hit soft cap.

    p.s. max out SP.

No. insignia of the deep is 15 seconds and a dps loss versus (e.g.) cavernous nothing.

What is the intelligence soft cap? Or are you referring to the SC soft cap?

    yes, crit softcap.

spellpower seems to become really yummy as you get geared.. especially in pyro/ele spec.

In the past it was advised by ... Arianne I believe .. to stack int over spell power.

Did this change with the soft cap implementation?

Rift makes testing easy with runes. Picking a starting point to test for yourselves will eliminate forum fodder and bad suggestions. I have max'd my dps for my class, because I parsed and re-spec'd and parsed and respec'd until I plateau'd for dps. For PvP I have a totally different philosophy. You just have to know what you want, and where to start.

And , the rule of thumb for MMO's I've always had for the guild, is that in starting your DPS maximizing: speccing for PvE (long battles) you want to go into spell power for consistant (non RNG based) dmg, and once maximixed, work forward speccing into crit in small chunks, 2-3% at at time (do this with runes, taking away int and replacing with direct crit ones a little at a time) until your plateau point is reached for DPS... parse to match 2 bursts of your big CD's (usually 3-6 minutes), and throw away parses that your big hitting CD's had a crit (to more easily compare data with a baseline). For DPS I always use Codex trinket

For PvP, you want to spec for a lot more crit at the start for short term luck rolls to gamble in your favor against enemy healers and such (2 lucky back to back crits can win a battle) and work backward reducing crit to a comfort point (take out crit runes, replace with int/sp). and duel your hardest class to fight
until you can lose enough crit (gaining sp) to still be comfortable. As PvP speccing is typically is more about confort and your desire to see back to back crits as your goal in the game or role on the team demands. For PvP I ALWAYS use Insignia of the deep (crit trinket)
