    Default Dagger + Offhand vs. Staff - Rank 6

    So I'm nearing Rank 6, but my current dilemma is whether or not to buy the R6 Staff, or the dagger + book combo. I know that people used to choose the staff simply because of Witchstones, but now that they can be applied to one-handed weapons is there really a difference between the two? Almost every Rank 6 Mage I've seen is sporting the staff, but I'm not sure if it's just an aesthetic option or if there is actually a reason I should choose it over an offhand combination.

    P.S. - I do zero PvE now, not sure about the future but as of now I have yet to enter a dungeon, so I'm speaking in the area of pure PvP.

    Maybe this will help you decide, taken from my spreadsheet:

    Clairvoyant's Mageblade:: End: 19 | SP: 271 | SC: 52
    Exemplar's Tome:: End: 18 | SP: 285.5 | SC: 20
    ----------
    Mageblade + Tome:: End: 37 | SP: 556.5 | SC: 72
    vs
    Clairvoyant's Greatstaff:: End: 29 | SP: 567.5 | SC: 47
    ----------

    Diff:: End: +8 | SP: -11 | SC: +25

    Look from the comparison the Sword + totem is look much better, and how about the DPS Staff is around 35.3 and while sword has 27.1 . So I'm still wondering. which one is much better for PVP or PVE. thx if any pro mage can answer my doubt.

    our damage comes from spellpower not from weapon dps.

    It really comes down to survivability vs damage.

    If you want survivability then dagger + OH

    If you want to max your damage, then staff

    Not sure if it's different for factions (I actually don't think so), but the defiant p8 (and you plan to get there sometime, right?) tome has no SC.

    You're losing about 10 SP and 4 SC for gaining 10 endurance if you choose the combo over the staff. Not really game breaking but still not a good tradeoff.

    It's very close, as the previous person mentioned by going with R8 1 handed and offhand you're gaining about +10 end for about -10 SP and a few CRIT. That's not a good trade off.

    The only reason I can see going for 1 handed and offhand is for the flexibility. You could swap out one of the pieces for a focus item if you raid. The one handed runes combined are also slightly better (they don't make up the difference) but again allows you more flexibility.

    The icewall rune might be worth going MH/OH depending if it has a CD, how long the CD is, and if it procs enough.

    A staff attracts more warriors than a sword.

    I currently use that Icewall rune for PvE and I estimate the cooldown is about 5-10 secs, but it procs a lot. Whether that rune is better than anything else though is up for discussion.

    I'd say its worth it for chloro/clock, and necro/lock. LL, SP, draining bolt, shadow life, mortality all proc it.
