What nice thing about rift is that you will end up with multiple roles and each role can have different soul combinations or different amount of points in each soul.

What are you aiming to do with the build?

Dominator/Chloro/* is fantastic for PVP, not so much for questing, rifting, doing instances, etc.

Even on a pvp server most people won't start out with Deliminator while leveling.

How about starting with chloro/elemental, getting a feel for things then switch up as you go? At level 13 you can start getting access to all the mage souls. At that point if you reset your souls at your trainer you can start playing around with different combinations.

Here is a guide that I found helpful some time ago

    (only slightly out of date)

You can buy multiple roles from your trainer (each new role costs more money then the last)

Each role can have 3 different souls.

At any time not in combat you can swap out any soul that has 0 points spent in it with another soul you have access to. (quests that start at level 13 open up new souls)

You can talk to your trainer to 'reset your soul' which resets all three souls in whatever role you have active to 0.

    Have fun!

Warlock doesn't burst too well. It does have nice mobility while damage dealing and a little self healing.

For levelling, do whatever you find works for you, though in all honesty, elemental+something or necrolock are probably worth at least trying. Elementalists can solo elites but very slowly, necrolock can plough through one mob after another self healing as it goes, but struggles more with elites. In the end though, go with whatever works for you. As long as your toolset gets the job done and you're having fun then that's great. However if you struggle don't be afraid to mess around. Rift lends itself to respeccing a lot and constantly changing class and you should embrace that if you find a certain spec isn't working out so well. I'm sure I saw people here and there quit other MMOs after being offered advice on a spec saying "I like it" then later on "this is slow and this spec is awful, this game sucks" (having never tried the more effective specs) don't be one of those.

In endgame *and group based* PvE, unfortunately, specialisation tends to win over, synergy beats diversity with trees that buff each other working best. Warlock buffs necromancer's dots (and any tree's damage), elementalist buffs crits and provides cooldowns for any spec, 0 points in archon lets you stack a buff on yourself, and so on.

I feel pvp works somewhere between the group and solo in terms of how much room you have in souls. If you're an all rounder you're not very good at anything, as many of the best toys require a bit of investment and synergy, but that said, having a few points in a spec to round out your present soul's weakness can make the difference between a workable spec and flattening everyone. That said there's people who do alright in pvp playing crazy combos because they find a role on the battlefield to fill and that spec does it well.

When you have your head round that sort of philosophy you can then get designing specs with that in mind. If I were you I'd take a second (or third) role and make sure one is a dedicated pve group spec for dungeons. Make sure you spend and update it whenever you update your other spec(s) and practice it a bit so you understand it (that'd be a whole other subject to ask or look up about really, just remember that some amazing endgame specs won't work at low levels as they miss key skills while other specs may be amazing at 15 or 40 but just get overtaken at endgame) maybe research it. Then with your levelling tree do whatever the hell appeals.

I was in the same boat as u last month. I went with chloro/war elem. Worked great. Figured out about having other roles and was messing around to find a better grouping setup with chloro. The pet isn't really useful in dungeons right now. I went with chloro/dom war. Love that setup. Now that im used to the game its pretty easy for pve. It takes alot to.get me to die. I say stick with it. Its very capable of doing great in pve. Im to the top of chorlo and a few.points in warlock. Just enough to get sacrifice mana. The rest im putting in dom. Im level 34 right now
