Default In-depth Discussion on PvE Specs and Rotations (PRE-1.1)

Just a quick note, this data will change with the coming of 1.1 and I will explain in each spec how it is being influenced.

With each test, I will go into detail as to what my rotation is, my spec, and things I did wrong during the test. (Especially Stormcaller)

Oh yeah. STORMCALLER IS VIABLE ST DPS. Just throwin that out there.

    First, these are my stats.

These tests were done with an 8 minute timer. Any *****ing that this is not sustained DPS can kindly ****.

    STORMCALLER/ELE

    http://i1133.photobucket.com/albums/...mBreakdown.png

    Build: http://rift.zam.com/en/stc.html?t=0z...Auz.V0xx0tssbo

As you can see, I average 650dps with this build on a single target, which is actually low. I allows Electrify/Ice Shear to fall off several times, and forgot to put up Pillaging Stone again. I also didn't manage my charge correctly during my 2nd burst phase and had to delay my cooldowns by about 10 seconds to get my mana prepared for it.

ROTATION: I honestly cannot describe this rotation. It has one and it doesn't. Let me explain.

    Your main rotation is:

Thunder Strike > Arctic Blast > Lightning Field

Raging Storm is to be used on cooldown. If possible, save it to refresh Electrify.
Use thunderbolt only to refresh electrify when Raging Storm cannot
Ice Shear and Exposure as needed. (CLIP ICE SHEAR. It gains damage from it's own debuff.)

Your burst rotation is Static Flux + Intensify + Trinket (if applicable) + Static Discharge. MAKE SURE ALL +DAMAGE IS ACTIVE BEFORE DISCHARGE. Discharge is a huge dps gain.

Patch 1.1 improves this by removing the GCD on SD and IE. THIS IS A BIG DEAL. THATS 3 SECONDS MORE OF OMGWTF DPS.

Static Charge to burn charge at 30% or more mana, Channel Elements to burn charge at 30% or less mana.

I STILL HAVE NOT TESTED IF THUNDER/HAIL STORM CAN BE WEAVED IN FOR A DPS GAIN. DONT ASK, FEEL FREE TO DISCUSS.
From what I can gather, using both is a DPS LOSS. If hypothermia applied to LF, it'd be a different story.

Also feel free to post your own experiences. I will be testing other builds. I am aware other people have done the more popular ones, but no one is really talking rotation.

    ARCHON - 10Warlock/5Pyro vs 5Warlock 10 Pyro (51 archon)

There is a difference, but the question is how long can you honestly stay in 1 spot on most encounters? I'd chalk it up to user preference. Also, in a raid the gap would be smaller as the No Opp spec has Int buff.

    Rotation was simple.

PD (If 90-100 charge) -> Waning Power -> Mana Leech (or whatever its called) -> 3 buff skills (EB first) -> PS

    Refresh buffs as nessicary.

I started out with all buffs except Elemental Resist active before fight began.

    Necrolock

    http://i1133.photobucket.com/albums/.../Necrolock.png

I'll be the first to say I didn't execute the rotation 100% properly... more like 95% properly. messed up on a few Lifeleeches and allowed DC stacks to reach 2 a few times. Also forgot Pillaging Stone refresh....again. X_X

This build and the Stormcaller build will be contending for top build. The SC build will be recieving a boost via GCD removal on its burst phase. This build will benefit from a better Charge Dump, however when comparing you must consider the fact that during this charge dump Soul Purge will be less usable, and thus is less of a DPS gain than you would originally think, albeit it is certainly going to be a dps gain.

Also, and this should go without saying, the SC build has vastly better AE than the Necrolock, and in a group setting SD will offer more DPS. (2500 more damage per person at my gear level, including pets)

I am very curious to see how these two specs perform in a raid environment. Both rotations are highly mobile. SC will outperform necrolock in any situation where more than 1 mob is present, but will have a much more mana intensive rotation, requiring more smart decisions to maintain it. Necrolock is much more lax than SC/Ele and offers about the same DPS in most situations.

    The rotation I used was:

Cooldowns: Trinket, SH, LF, and NT.
Keep up all dots, keep grave rot down for 5 DC stacks, use plague bolt if needed on opp procs to get DC stacks, Void Bolt/Draining Bolt filler. I also did not engage my pet until it had been Plague bolted, Necrosised, and LD. (There is a small gap betweein the pets GCD where you can land LD without a dps loss.)

Also, one last thing to note, LD has stacking issues, which can effect your pets damage output. Pet's also don't see to scale quite as well as players either, so this might affect the Necrolock down the line as well, depending, as they get more DPS from their pets than the SC/Ele.

There was no documentation for anything, and Rift has been doing some stealth nerfing. Numbers to compare with will show just what exactly was changed.

This one was somewhat rushed, mostly because I was disgusted with it. It capped around 630 (the image shows this under a 4 minute scenario, I had 600 at 8 minutes but removed Ignite from the rotation to see if it helped. It barely did.)

The reliance upon GoP makes this even worse.

In 1.1, the cooldown on Heat Wave will be reduced to 2 minutes. Pyro/Ele, may you fare better then.

The rotation I used was Countdown (If 10% buff up) > FB > Countdown (If 10% buff wasnt up) > Fireball. I used CB on proc (I turned on Charge before using it for an extra 20% damage at little to no cost), and blew cooldowns correctly. (IE > HW > IE later). Smart use of Countdown under burst rotation netted some extra dps, but not much. Ignite did not seem to be worth the GCD.

I'm actually not going to bother with the Pyro/lock or SC/lock derivatives. Pyro/ele showed me Pyro/Lock isn't going to be worth much more of a damn, and Sc/Lock/Ele is just too stretched thin and opportunity hardly helps at all with the build. It has the 20% more damage but this is outweighed by the 50% cooldown, 30% more crit, and pet damage/buff. Just from eyeing it. I will give it a chance in 1.1 however. I have the baselines I wanted. Feel free to discuss until 1.1 releases. I will be back then to look things over, along with anyone else who wishes to assist.

I am going to ask this since I can't quite figure it out myself. in your Void Bolt damage it says a max of 1.1k. Considering it uses 40% of your spell power, has only a +25% damage bonus with necrolock how did you achieve 1.1k? Base max is 110, so 101 + 40% of 817 = 427.8 damage + 25% = 534 + 50% from crit = 802. Necro/lock has no damage boost dumps so I can't think how Void Bolt did 1.1k? I mostly just ask this since if something was skewing the damage results then you'd have to redo most of the whole set

Other than that not showing much more than isn't out there already, but decent effort. For general reasons I don't see why these needed separate posts? I don't think this forum has a huge size limit or anything

I'm a little disappointed that you don't feel like doing SC/Lock, as I'm not motivated enough to do it myself and was looking forward to seeing the results. I feel like it's still possible that SC/Lock/Ele would do more than SC/Ele. You didn't mention that with 30 lock you gain 4% more crit chance. Also, because the spam spell for this build (Lightning Field) is instant cast, you can often actually take advantage of Opportunity, and use it for Hailstorm or Lightning Strike (instead of blowing it on a queued Void Bolt or something).

If Ele is better than Lock, it seems like Chloro/Ele might be better than Chloro/Lock. The pet and direct damage spells wouldn't help, but the crit damage, IE, Exposure, etc would. I never see any Chloro/Ele main heal builds though

The Warlock/Necro spec I use is similar with 35/31. The only difference is I don't ever use plague bolt, Deathly Calling isn't that important to keep up. Half a second off the CD for Blood Spike? That can't be more than a 5-10 DPS increase. While you are losing more DPS for even use Plague Bolt.

Here's an 11 minute parse. Self buffed with Warlock armor only.

    http://img691.imageshack.us/i/locknecrodps.jpg/

    Here's my gear

    http://img812.imageshack.us/i/rift2011033001245482.jpg/

I have gotten I believe 1 upgrade since I did that parse.

Since the destruction of the Archon DPS spec, I believe this is the highest sustained DPS spec for mages at the moment.

Your gear is vastly better than mine. Comparing your parse to every one I've done is pointless. You need to redo every single parse before you can throw out "this is the best".

In 1.1, Sc/Ele and Necro/Lock seem to be tied. Sc/Ele brings some utility, stupid nuclear bomb aoe, and a few knockbacks to help position mobs, whereas Necro/Lock brings some emergency backup heals. It comes down to preference at this point I think. Pyro/Ele also seems to be viable but is required to spend time managing GoP, has lackluster AE compared to Necro/Lock and let's not even compare it to Sc/Ele. The only thing Pyro/Ele has going for it is stupid stupid burst damage and on fights with stun mechanics, flicker.

Granted overall, I am VERY happy that 3 specs are viable. (5 if you count Archon and Chloro that every raid should have)
