    I really hope the words "balance" and "nerf" don't taint this game like it has every other MMO in recent years. I cannot name one recent MMORPG besides EvE online that hasn't been ruined or had its community split by "Class Balance".

    Just to be the devil's advocate for the sake of discussion and clarification, are you okay with 1 class of each arch-type (tank, melee damage, ranged damage, and heals) being the absolute best and everything else being able to do their job half as well?

    Open discussion about issues is really good, actually. Feedback is healthy for a game. It doesn't have to rule or ruin it.

    Those words you speak of will naturally come into the vocab while discussing the game as they are easiest to use and native to environments that use math.

    It really remains to be seen how much of each character is the parent class and how much is the subclass. Too much parent class and things feel generic, but too much subclass and it could be difficult to balance.

    For the sake of simplicity and making the fact we still are a bit off from finding out the truth. Something like this should just make it easy

    Tanks = 4
    Melee = 4
    Caster = 4
    Healer = 4
    = 16

    Now multiply by x2 for faction to get 32 and divide by 8 for 4 classes per race. Pure speculation with terrible math at its best.
    I'd say its not worth banging the head on until we uncover all the ? marks!

    Lets just hope they will be ambitious but not overly ambitious and royally screw balance over. I'll be optimistic for now and classes are, in my opinion, one of the best things in MMORPGs. The four classes so far mildly interest me so far and I definitely expect more classes... I guess we'll see!

    I can't think of another word to use besides the oh-so-dreaded B word. Perhaps the folks at Trion will dance around the word with a funny sentence to try and trick us?
    "All characters should be able to perform with similar output as another who shares the same role."
    Then we're see a bunch of replies stating how it's unfair that teh noobz can perform even half as well as them, because they are so uber-leet-haxorz. Or something to that effect.

    ... I really don't even know what I am trying to say in this post. Basically, with triple-A MMO like Rift you're going to see a lot of, *gulp*, BALANCING. I doubt there is going to be one go-to-class for each archetype. I doubt there will be one race that is clearly the best. That doesn't seem to be the game they're making. But I could always be wrong, I am just going off of a few ideas (previous games the devs have worked on and influenced, making sure every class is fun, the ability for the company to make profit, etc). Of course there is typically a class, race and or spec that is THE BEST in terms of raw numbers (looky, my X CLASS did 0.4% more total damage than your Y CLASS).

    Hopefully I don't come off as a bit brutish (and I apologize if I do), I'm just trying to make sure people get the point I and a few others have been trying to make.

    It does sound like it will be hard to balance, but on the upside at least it seems like you'll be able to create a character that feels right for you. Of course, it might mean you'll be permastunned by a friendly neighborhoud other-faction rogue, but who knows. No matter what they do people will be out whining about class balance (regardless of how balanced or unbalanced it is)...

    You got a point there. I have no problem with imbalancy. it works well in DDO, makes some classes more challenging to play than others. but as soon as you enter the painful world of PvP you are moving on very thin ice. either one class overpowers all, or all classes play the same. it's only a thin line between diversity and unfairness. I hope the devels can walk that line!

    So many classes will be interesting to see in Action.
    I just hope that they'll all be diverse and fun to play.

    Picking a class will be a pain if there is 25-32 classes to choose from, there will probably be at least 4 classes you would want to play. How to decide? =/
