Default More RP Addons - Notepad?

    Hey there!

I've been thinking of investigating an addon that would be particularly useful to me and, I suspect, others as well. What I'd be after is a 'notepad' style addon, that would allow me to view the entirety of what I've written without the need to scroll back left and right to make changes and such. That is to say, I want a streamlined text editor!

    The Reasoning

I'm a pretty detailed roleplayer, I like to think! My standard posts usually take up two full posts (each post being about 185 characters long, I believe) with my more-detailed pieces going as high as twenty in length. During this process, I sometimes forget exactly what word I used where... and I just don't want to repeat myself! I figure that in my posts, almost a full 50% of the time (I also time my own posts) can be dedicated solely to scrolling from left to write, checking wordings and making changes.

I think this is a bottleneck that can be fixed!

    What would it do?
Now, this is the tricky part! Between writing academic papers, leading guild stuff, and keeping bizarre hours courtesy of living in Australia, I just havn't been able to get around to see exactly what is feasible with the API. Which makes me wonder... what is it people would like, if anything, from an addon like this?

My ideas thus far that I'm lead to believe would work splendidly:
    • A text pane in which you could enter in text and edit it all in one window.
    • This pane would give you an indication of how close you are to the current character limit.
    • The above could be extended for two modes, depending on personal preference: a mode that restricts your writing to just the one post, or one that lets you go nuts and keep track of current limit for the current post and how many posts you're up to. (My preference is the former)

But putting text into a window is all well and good. What should you do with it -afterwards-? This is where I'm not sure what is possible and is something I'll be looking into over the next couple weeks!

    Possible ideas were:
    1. You have a button that simply posts your texts into chat. Ideally, fully automated. (That is, you press the button and it goes directly into local chat)
    2. If that's not possible, have it post copy chat into the edit line directly, where you then operate it from there.
    3. If that's not possible, a simple button that selects all text and copies it all would be nice.
    4. And, as a last ditch effort, nothing more than a text pane that you have to manually use to copy and paste yourself.

    Initial Concerns
I would worry first and foremost that the API is likely not going to let addons speak for your character (imagine the security issues with that, should you download a 'bad' addon).

Second of all, what would the interest in this sort've addon be? If I'd be making it just for myself, I'd likely make a third party text editor that just does exactly what I need it to do! But, naturally, I'm not going to be asking people to download an .exe just for a highly-specialised text editor! Would people want more than the utterly simple functionality this might provide?

Feedback would, most certainly, be appreciated... as you crowd are really the lot that I'd be aiming this addon for in the first place (and, hence, the decision not to place this in the API development forums).

Maybe this can help in figureing out if it's possible: http://www.riftui.com/downloads/info186-Notepad.html

I don't know if the addon I linked to is spot on like that you wish, but it's one I've been using a bit (not overly much).
Usually for well, taking notes. I'd love an addon for making lists though.. I'm a list-addict IRL but really it's not so convinient to write some things on physical paper (besides my wall is kind of filling up fast).
I usually make lists over character names that I know icly and sometimes if there's some conditions to that (such as hearing it through someone else) which I'd need to remember in case of "Where the hell does she know my name from"
    Etc.

I never write my emotes and such in advance though, I'm more of a "on the go" type-of-person, it's slow but I can't really wrap my head around writing something in advance and not in the situatuon.
I suppose it's good for story-teller-esque RP though, where you have to have a lot of envirionmental descriptions.

Long story short: It's sort of hard at the moment. The underlying problem is that the RiftTextfield widget cannot use word wrap (or a different font size, or anything).

So you'd have to do all the extra work of tracking selections, and that brings us to another problem: You can't detect or process arrow keys, and you can't intercept keyboard entry events from a textfield type object; rather, you can be told what string will be entered (all arrow keys yield an empty string), and then it is entered no matter what you do.

So basically the reason the editor sucks is that the editor sucks. If RiftTextfield acquires word wrap, 90% of this problem goes away. If it doesn't, I don't know that we can do anything to improve it anyway.
You can play WoW in any MMO. You don't have to play WoW in RIFT. Oh, and no, RIFT is not a WoW clone. Not having fun any more? Learn to play, noob! I don't speak for Riftui, but I moderate stuff there. Just came back? Welcome back! Here's what's changed. (Updated for 2.5!)

Neither am I, really. Which makes the need to correct small mistakes all the more important, I think. More time to be 'in the situation' and less time worrying if you mispelled something or used the same word too many times, etc.
