    Default Lore Progression Through Rift

    ***MAY CONTAIN SPOILERS***

A few notes before I post this.

#1 - World Events that are annual, will have a year next to them. Those that are not, will not have a year. Some events retain their questlines, resulting in the Water Saga, Wanton Maw/Fire Saga, and the 'Air Saga' (I believe the Storm Legion leadup quests still exist).

#2 - This is accurate up to January 28, 2013, but will outdated once the Earth/Air(?) 'Dendrome chapter' of Rift (What I consider Chapter 5 of the lore of Rift - The others being Life/Death, Water/Death, Fire/Earth, Air/Death) is in the game. I may or may not update, but I request this to be stickied for any immersion, lore, or roleplay centered player of Rift, especially as this game gets more and more layers of content and it can be confusing for newer players.

    Here we go!

Also for note of Dragon Kills:

Greenscale, Life - Dies in 1.0 in Greenscale's Blight raid, in Stillmoor. Chronicle added in 1.5 (Ashes of History) in which Dacia Ultan, Shyla Starhearth, and a revived Atrophinius (killed in Realm of the Fae, undead in Runic Descent) also defeat Greenscale.
    Raid also contains Death elements.

Akylios, Water - Dies in 1.3 (Waves of Madness) in Hammerknell raid, in Moonshade Highlands. Chronicle added in 1.5 in which Scotty, Borrin, and the Faceless Man continue to take part in the story of the delve.
    Raid also contains Death elements.

Laethys, Earth - Dies in 1.8 (Infernal Dawn) in Infernal Dawn raid, in Ember Isle. No Chronicle.
Raid is jointly Earth and Fire, with more Fire.

Maelforge, Fire - Dies in 1.8 (Infernal Dawn) in Infernal Dawn raid, in Ember Isle. No Chronicle.
Raid is jointly Earth and Fire, with more Fire.

Crucia, Air - Dies in 2.0 (Storm Legion expansion) in Frozen Tempest raid. Chronicle added in 2.1 which illustrates her 'survival'.
    Raid is all Air.

Regulos, Death - Dies in 2.1 (Endless Eclipse) in Endless Eclipse raid. No Chronicle as of yet.
    Raid is all Death.

Dendrome raid will 95% chance be Life-based.

Consider that the current raid rifts are Air (FT), Death (EE), and then remaining is Life (next raid). Also, run a google search for Dendrome and you'll get "Forest Tree Database."

This is partially done, as I have not quested in Morban, Steppes of Infinity, and Ashora yet, and have not done any of the raids for Storm Legion.

    Status of Dragon Cults

    Life:
-Cults cycle through the ages as they devour one another
-Most recent at launch was the Fae on Telara, led by Fae Lord Tryl
-Prince Hylas of the High Elves of Silverwood, alone while the Vigil's army clashes against Aedraxis and Regulos in Mathosia, becomes corrupted by Greenscale and promises of power
-Ascended defeat Tryl to save Silverwood from his frenzied fae, but Hylas quickly takes control and leads his Aelfwar on a march to free Greenscale
-the stories of Silverwood (Guardian), Scarwood (both), Moonshade (both), and Stillmoor (both) culminate in the end of the Life Saga for Guardians, and just the Greenscale's Blight raid for Defiants, with Hylas, his generals, and Greenscale dead
-Aelfwar driven into disarray. Some return to the Vigil, some wander, some kill each other, some are killed by the wild. No organization left, after 1.4's attempt to reclaim Greenscale's Dragon Motes
-Alltha, a spirit of Ember Isle, attempts to collect Life energy in order to rule as new 'leader' of Life's worship. She is not a large focus of the zone's story and is killed in a zone event
-Storm Legion shows half of Brevane corrupted by Life and its varied mutations, by the work of Salverola, promised power by Crucia
-He is defeated in his tower in Kingsward, and the land is on its way to the beginnings of restoration. Life, in this example, is just shown to be a tool of Crucia's machinations

CURRENT STATUS: Cult is dead, with possibly a few stragglers or high elven nobility with followers. Life now exists as just an energy with no specific organization after it. Salverola's fall has lead to huge disruption of enemy efforts in Brevane.

(Zones with Life cultist focus: Silverwood, Scarwood Reach, Moonshade Highlands, Stillmoor, Cape Jule, City Core, Eastern Holdings, Ardent Domain, Kingsward)

    Water:
-Cults start from a few people hearing maddening whispers, and then collecting into cabals in order to worship the source of the madness, Akylios. They are called the Abyssal.
-While the exact number of cabals is unknown, and there may be more hidden out there..
-One was first driven from their central temple of Meridian, and then killed off by Ascended
-Another is defeated by Ascended in Moonshade
-Iron Pine's is driven by Ascended and then killed off in Hammerknell
-Whichever remaining cabals exist (hidden in Bronze Tomb? or elsewhere), they have not taken the chance to strike yet.
-After Akylios's death, they, like the remaining Aelfwar, make an effort to capture its planar power and reform it into an Avatar of Madness. Faceless Man if Defiant, or yourself if Guardian. This fails.
-Storm Legion continents contain misc. cultists and Water beings, but they either invade from the Planes, or they are mind controlled by Crucia (her job likely made much easier after Akylios' death)

CURRENT STATUS: With at least 3 main leaders killed, they seem to pose little to no threat any more. Any future threat will be planar in nature.

(Zones with Water cultist focus: Freemarch, Moonshade Highlands, Iron Pine Peak, Seratos/Morban?)

    Earth:
-Akin to a dragon sitting on gold, Earth cultists (the Golden Maw, on Telara) corrupt a rich area and then just mine the heck out of it, instead of spreading across the entire land
-Laethys corrupted the ancient Eth, and likely played a big background role in their development into the Empire they became
-After Eth's fall, many Eth became worshippers of Laethys, still fashioning themselves as royalty
-Their home was Shimmersand, but many went north to mine Scarlet Gorge
-Collecting pieces of Laethys, they formed an alliance with the Wanton to reform her in Ember Isle, but Ascended followed
-The Ascended disrupted operations on Mathosia, and pursued the Maw to Ember Isle, defeating all or almost all their leadership along the way, as well as the half-formed dragon herself
-Storm Legion shows another race, the Architects, which may have followed Laethys before, but Crucia may now control them

CURRENT STATUS: The mortal followers of Laethys are likely reduced to the same levels of beggars searching for scraps. The new focus is on the Archetects, and their story is yet to be told to any good amount of detail. All in all, while the Storm Legion may have seemed the weakest cult originally, that placement is now firmly on the worshipers of Laethys.

(Zones with Earth cultist focus: Scarlet Gorge, Shimmersand, Ember Isle, Ashora?, ..Dendrome?)

    Fire:
-Most of the Wanton are beings that come from the Plane of Fire, as few mortals on Telara can handle the cults, save for some pyromancers and such.
-So, they tend to not have huge presence on Telara, other than to invade it.
-Silverwood and Gloamwood tell a story of goblins left on Telara that worship Maelforge, and they are hatching his eggs. Ascended defeat these goblins and Maelforge's brood
-Wanton return in Scarlet Gorge, having taken over a town that made the mistake of accepting their 'help' against Death and Earth. Ascended defeat the Wanton there
-Droughtlands and Shimmersand are full of Wanton, but Droughtlands is more of their home. Ascended disrupt operations there and save Lantern Hook (both in this timeline and in another)
-It is only after allying with the Golden Maw that the Wanton become a larger threat. They go to Ember Isle (which is also under continued threat by corrupted spirits) to awaken Maelforge and reform Laethys. This fails, and many of the Wanton leadership are killed.
-Fire beings in Storm Legion tend to be mind controlled by Crucia, like with Water beings

CURRENT STATUS: They're still out there, in the Planes (like any 'planar cult', really), but their presence on Telara is greatly lessened and they are of no immediate threat. When you do invade, it'll be huge, but now Maelforge is dead and the Wanton are cut apart, reducing their threat significantly. It also helps that Ember Isle is being reclaimed, freeing the land from possible Fire planar influence.

(Zones with Fire cultist focus: Gloamwood, Scarlet Gorge, Droughtlands, Shimmersand, Ember Isle, Seratos/Morban?)

    Air:
-With Crucia 'trapped' under ice, her followers were limited, left only to harass the people of Iron Pine Peak, and attempt to build their numbers with mind control in Shimmersand
-However, this was a ruse. Even as you defeat the lackies of these zones, it was only to put up appearances of being just like any other cult
-In the meantime, the actual Storm Legion army has been orchestrating the downfall of Brevane via Salverola (Life), mind controlling the Architects (Earth) and Water and Fire beings, manipulating the mortal survivors ('Lycini') via their Queen, and putting Regulos' remaining followers on the defensive in Dusken
-After dealing with most of these threats, the Storm Legion is cut down significantly, but not defeated, as their presence in this land is quite entrenched
-Crucia is 'killed' in the Frozen Tempest raid, but she has an attack on Tempest Bay at the same time

CURRENT STATUS: Huge threat. While her army's placement on Brevane and Dusken is reduced thanks to the Ascended, and her dragon form killed, Crucia remains at large, and her army is still significant. However, even they are likely disposable, and her aims seem set on taking the Ascended as her new Legion. Good news is that if Crucia can be defeated for good, her hold on her followers will shatter much faster than with say, Greenscale or Akylios. Air beings want to be free (as seen with the Bahmi story), but some want to dominate. Crucia's true death will tip the balance the other way.

(Zones with Air cultist focus: Shimmersand, Iron Pine Peak, all of Brevane both directly and by proxy, all of Dusken both directly and by proxy)

    Death:
-Death cults contain a lot of nameless undead, but also several significant figures
-It is only by Regulos and his temptations of power, that so many turn outright evil from Death
-Death cults, known normally as the Endless Court (or partially the Shapers of Dusken), were most powerful overall, but the manipulations of Crucia against Regulos led to his defeat
-Endless Court laid low in Mathosia until King Aedraxis becomes corrupt (long story)
-After his possession by Regulos (the 'Shade of Regulos') and the shattering of this, Death power and remnants of Regulos scatters across Mathosia. This even has the effect of disturbing Akylios' prison, which in turn affects the waves around Ember Isle as the Kelari attempt to flee their homeland
-Because the Ward is so weakened by the events of the Shade, survivors collect in the last remaining city, Port Scion. This is betrayed from within, by Alsbeth, revealing herself to be a follower of Regulos
-The Guardians form base in Sanctum, the Defiants take over former Abyssal stronghold of Meridian. For some time, Alsbeth is de facto leader of the cult, as it scatters across Mathosia as never seen since the Blood Storm War
-Events in Freemarch remove the Endless Court's presence, and stop Alsbeth's revival of the Kings and Wardens of Freemarch, but she claims Eliam (to be defeated later in Runic Descent)
-Events in Stonefield stop Alsbeth's revival of the dead of the region, and the threat of takeover of the town of Granite Falls
-Events in Gloamwood stop Alsbeth's revival of the dead of the region, with the leadership of The Hag, and the threat of takeover of the town of Gloamwood Pines
-Events in Scarlet Gorge culminate in stopping Alsbeth from corrupting the gnar queen of Foul Cascade, and her children
-Events in Scarlet Gorge are the end of the first major section of Death content, where the Ascended stem the flow of the Endless Court from reaching their homes, from Stillmoor
-Events in Moonshade Highlands stop Alsbeth's revival of many deceased dwarves, but we learn that she allies herself with with Abyssal to open Hammerknell (and the many Death creatures within)
-Events in Stillmoor stop Alsbeth's attempt to recall Regulos onto Telara with the shards of Regulos, and hugely disrupt Endless Court proceedings in general
-River of Souls events stops Alsbeth from bringing in a potentially endless army of undead, and then kills Alsbeth herself
-Events on the Guardian story throughout the zones show the corruption of Kain until he eventually takes the mantle of the leader of the Endless from Alsbeth, shown in the Chronicle of Attunement, where he makes a show of power by attacking both faction HQs
-After the defeat there, Kain retreats into the last Death stronghold of Dusken, working with the Shapers to return Regulos to the world
-Endless Eclipse finally ends this nightmare, kills Kain, and destroys Regulos as he tries to cross over

CURRENT STATUS: Finally driven from Telara! Mathosia is now on the road to recovery, and Dusken now has a chance. Undead may always exist, but it was only their lord that ensured they operated with such power.

(Zones with Death cultist focus: Freemarch, Stonefield, Gloamwood, Scarlet Gorge, Scarwood Reach, Moonshade Highlands, Stillmoor, Seratos, Morban)

    Other:
-Death cults were known to destroy Mathosia, the Dwarves by proxy, early mortal civilizations, the continent of Dusken, and all of Telara, as well as a known future version of it
-Life cults terrorized the land, and have more recently led to a fall of the High Elves, and the continent of Brevane
-Fire cults sabotaged the ancient Eth and Kelari, as well as ravaged the rest of Telara
-Water cults have done huge damage to Freemarch even before the Endless Court appeared, and they occupy land in Moonshade and Iron Pine
-Earth cults destroyed the Eth from within, building up their eventual hubris
-Air cults sit and wait, but previously terrorized Iron Pine Peak and were building a spire for their Queen. They have huge control over Brevane and much of Dusken.

    POWER SCALE:
    1. Death (but now #2 on Telara)
    2. Air (but now #1 on Telara)
    3. Fire (overwhelming army)
    4. Water (less impact than Life, but better plans)
    5. Life (usually lacks a plan)
    6. Earth (so far)

Interesting. I took a look at the achievements when they were leaked, and the zone itself seems to be based on:
    -Life (surprised me)
    -but also Earth (Architect focus)
-and likely Air (continuation of expansion story, Architects controlled by Crucia, etc)

The raid itself may very well involve Life in a big way, but I wouldn't rule out it being a joint Life/Earth raid, with parts of Air put in to advance the story (and maybe a boss or two that is Air).

EDIT: Though it's about time we get a Life focused raid. We might get Earth or Air bosses, but I hope the overall atmosphere and location is based on Life.

Wow omg Maeloda, thank you very much! That was a huge effort you put into that and I reallllly appreciate it! I was looking for just such a thing as this to help decide how my blog will go, thank you!

Also, good job on getting it (hopefully?) accurate! Of course, I'm clueless on end game stuff. Also I did notice a lot of spelling errors that threw me off. When it says Fae Rule, do you mean Yule? And at the bottom under SL, when you say lvl 50 end game, do you mean 60? Just wanted to clear up some confusion, thanks!

Yeah, it was a bit sloppily done at parts, haha.

    -Fae Yule is correct
-And I do mean Lv 60

I like doing this sort of organization in games. I used to name off the area progression of Final Fantasy IX in my head to keep it busy when I was younger, and I do this similar thing with MMOs in Rift (like what I just did), TOR, and The Secret World etc.

Good job on a summary. I was thinking of organizing something like this on my own, but no need now haha!

    Yeah

It seems if Water is to return in a BIG BIG way (aka not a sliver 10-man), it'll be in T3 of this expansion, or ... next expansion.

In fact, I see the Planes of Water and Fire having a real forefront in the launch of a Planar based expansion, really. Air and Earth can take their back seat like Fire and Water currently are, and Life and Death can have a good focus to some degree (especially Death).

    No problem

I'll be happy to make an updated list, assuming I'm still playing, once all the 2.X content is out (so a year from now, at least).
